How do I find out what color a Porsche "Special Paint Code" is?

I have a red Targa, that I've been trying to figure out the color on. I even bought the Certificate of Authenticity. For the color it says "Special Color/Code 99V9" On the placard on the inside of the RH fender under the carpet, the number is 049-9-2. Neither of these numbers match what I see in the books I have. I would have guessed it is Ruby Red, but that number is 810, I believe. I'm getting close to shopping for a paint job, and I'd like to stay original on the color, but I don't know how to unravel this mystery. For what it's worth, the interior leather was marked "Special Color" also, I'd call it Caramel as it's darker than Cork.

Question Possibly one of these?

Kiln Red
Garnet Red
Velvet Red
Peru Red

As a side note, it looks like the car had a few unique special order options like the chrome trim and stainless Targa bar (unless you did that yourself). So, the original paint might have been one of those "paint-to-sample" requests. Just guessing though.

That's a great color. It looks...dare I say it??? like Ferrari red almost. I would say you'd have to take it to a good shop and get them to special mix a color to match it.

I appreciate the feedback. I'm guessing that it was painted to match some sample, as when I looked at the CofA again, it says something to the effect of "Special Color to match", and then gave the code. I may try asking a local Porsche dealer if they can figure it out, if not, I'll just have the body shop I choose match the color. The car really was pretty well loaded with options and specials.

Porsche did several special codes 999 or 666 this means the car does not have a factory color for the year and it may or may not be a factory Porsche color. The original owner paid and might I add well for this option. If you can contact the original owner he may have the answer. If that dosen't work have a paint manufacture take a picture with a color spectrometer camera this will not give you the exact code but will give you a blendable match. Akzo Nobel (Sikkens) has a great camera and color documention.

Good luck,

Bryan

There should be a plate on the drivers side frame with the paint number on it - that would be the original paint. If it was changed since, then you may have a hard time trying to match it up.

Steve:

That is the purpose of this post. I listed the number on the RH fender, which should also be the paint code, and the numbers make no sense. Since I've got the 999 mentioned earlier on this thread, and the CofA says "Special Color", then the original owner ordered a special color to their spec.
