Help: First rust

Hi Gang

My 3.2 Carrera in Prussian Blue Metallic has 2.5 rust spots -- half under the driver's side outboard window scraper.

Is this a touch up job or is this more major?

Those are the only spots I can find anywhere. The spots are round -- the lines in between are just dust - not rust and the picture obviously vertical

Thoughts?

Gee, that doesn't look too bad. Wish there was a better pic.

That appears to be surface rust...only one way to find out and I'd do that and then spot paint for the time being as it can only get worse.
Not uncommon for the paint to get chipped under that trim strip or at the edge. I have one spot just like it and it was only a surface deal and easily taken care of.

Probably the result of someone using a screwdriver to lift that trim strip. That's why I use a nylon RC model airplane propeller to do that job. Actually a half propeller. If it was a good propeller it would be on a model.

Thanks Guys -- I'll post a better pic tomorrow

Assuming it's just surface how do you guys take care of it? I'm new to paintwork of any kind other than home interior

I sanded just the rust areas until clean metal, primed/painted. I used a med grit to fine grit using a small stylus (pencil eraser).

I primed and painted with a small brush until the paint was level, wet sanded (it gets dull) then a light overspray of clearcoat for a shiny finish.

BTW, anything will look better to your eye than the rust so don't worry about it and you'll have stopped continued deterioration.

I believe that I would use one of those products that neutralizes the rust after I sanded it to shiny metal and before the primer.

That's not what I would call rust... Easy fix. Dig it out, prime it and fill the void with bondo. Then get one of those paint touch up techs to match the paint.
The tech could also do any stone chips your car may have.

Funny thing I have an 86 3.2 that is Prussian blue as well and has two very similar spots in the same place. How difficult is it to pop off the scraper strip? I have all the service history on the car and years ago the window track was repaired and I believe they damaged the paint as SCadaddle suggested by using a screw driver to lift the window trim.

Are you looking to DIY ?
You could have a body shop grind and patch that spot for $300 (wild guess)
They might want to paint the entire door, for paint match issues.
Depends on how cheap you want to go.
I would hate to repaint an entire door just for those 2 spots.

Sugarwood -- I have the paint pen for stone chips and am happy with that DIY and honestly - -the spots don't bother me personally -- what would bother me is for them to become more than a small eyesore. I'd happily let a good shop do the door but not if some DIY touch ups is all it needs to prevent spread.
