Fog Light Question
I have a question on factory foglights. Well to say the least they dont work but my question is what all is involved in the connection. The bulbs are ok, fuse was blown but not replaced. The switch lights up. I tried turning on high beams (from what the book says the fogs are suppose to come on.) but nothing happens with the fogs. Anyone have any ideas? Any help would be great.
Thanks, Grey 81sc Targa |

If the switch lights up when lights are on and gets brighter when pulled out does that mean the switch is ok?
Does fuse 1 (Fog light) need to have other fuses hot in order to work? Grey 81sc Targa |

For my '84 the fog light only come on with low beam. They will cut out once high beam is hit. Replace the fuse and see if they come on with low beam and ignition on. Wiring is very basic for fog lights. Worst case you could jump power to the light to make sure they work and then work your way back through the system. The fog light switch should be dark when pushed in. It will light once pulled out. However, the low beams and ignition must be on. Good luck.

The way mine were originall wired was that the fog lights went OFF when the high beams went on. They would only work with the low beam lights on - I rewired them to work any time the lights are on - low and high beam.

Since some of you guys have already wired your fogs to work independently without having the low beams on, where is the wire that I need to connect to 12v? I figured that I'd try to save myself some time and just ask you guys. Thanks.

I added another small(4 fuse) fuse block. You could also just connect into an empty or little used fuse on the block. I ran a separate power line from the battery to energize the small fuse block....now I have plenty room for other stuff-I have my Hella air horn relay on there, also fog lite relay.

The fuse is good for the fog lights. The switch lights up when pulled back. The fog lights dont come on at all. The bulbs seem to be good. So the only places that it can fail is the switch, bulb and fuse?? There is no other fuse or wire that runs with it?
Grey 81 sc Targa PS. Perhaps I need to get myself power tester. Any advice on what one to get? |

Did you say that the lites worked? If not, are all connections and grounds good? Unless a PO screwed around with the lites, then no, there arent any more fuses. I believe that the fog lite wire is white w/green stripe. Get a cheap test probe, the kind with the pointy end, alligator clip on the end of a 4' wire with a light bulb in the handle. Checker Auto has them for under $10...its a life saver. Start at one end(say the lights and probe your way on back to the switch make sure you get power each time you test, and when you dont get power, hopefully theres your problem. Oh yeah, pull out the 5 pin connectors(dont know if they are same for later years) and test the pins. Give them a cleaning and a coat of dielectric grease too. Make sure you dont slide the probe around, making sparks, or youll blow fuses, another thing to do(yes, I learned the hard way).

Here's what I did...
My fog lights don't work either. The fuses are good .
According to Wayne's fog light wiring diagram, the switch should be illuminated when there is power to the switch and the switch is on. The light is that little circle with an X. I found this worked on low beam only, as discussed above. So I have power to the switch and the switch works for the switch light but not for the fog lights. I swapped relays (check that they have the same part number.) and that didn't fix it. I removed the relay and with my voltmeter I had power on terminal 30 which is from the battery on the fog light side of the circuit. I did not have power on terminal 86 which is on the switch side of the circuit. (The terminal numbers are on the bottom of the relay.) I made a little jumper wire and, with the relay plugged partially in, I jumped terminal 30 to terminal 87. The fog lights came on. I also jumped 30 to 86. The relay clicked and the lights came on. So power is not getting from the back of the switch to the relay. The problem is the switch. I gained access to the back of the dash board from the trunk. There is a blower with multiple connections plus a riveted air box. It looked hard so I quit. Frank |

Here is a link where someone helped me with a similar issue. I rewired mine to not work entirely independently, but to go off when I turn the lights off, and to work independent of the high and low beam.
Any questions let me know. Fog Lights Issue

Ok here is the update. The bulbs are tested and are good. The fuse is not blown. Is the only other thing that could be bad is the switch? How does the switch itself work and what should i look for? Thanks in advance guys.

Im guessing that you have a similar problem as Frank....Its fairly straight foreward getting the blower out....dont know about later cars, my 71 only had fresh air blower no ac. It now resides in a box. I actually get more airflow with the thing gone!
But once that stuff is out of the way, its really easy to get to...otherwise you'll never reach the switch with that stuff in there.
