Wiring 3.6 into 69 911 Help

Hey all,

Has anyone ever done a 3.6 conversion into a 69? Obviously, the 69 has it's own set of connectors and problems compared to the standard 14 pin. Would love to pick your brain about how you wired it up.

*Note...I will most likely have the Patrick Motorsports wiring conversion kit. But, it goes to the 14 pin, and not the 6 pin.

I could likely make you a 14 pin to multiple 6 pin connector adapter. Just need wire designations and lengths. I'm building a '69 harness right now...

Get the PMS unit, send it to me and I'll clone it and make it fit the '69 wiring properly.
Then return it if you can.
Shhhh...

I got a few parts for my Six from PMS, oil cooler, clutch/flywheel package and an assortment of other stuff. Top quality products. Sure they cost money, but their stuff is well made and well designed.

What year 3.6? All you need to do its look at the appropriate wiring diagrams for the respective year of the chassis and motor and make the correct connections. Porsche is pretty good about maintaining wiring color codes for the major components. You can retain the multi pin connector in the engine compartment and plug the more recent electronic / fuse box into that connector. That's how I did it some 20 years ago before PMS or Timon's (?) had a kit. The only piece I used from PMS was their flywheel.

The '69 has no 14 pin connector to plug into! It is completely different than anything before or after it. Wire colors are the same, getting them to where they need to be is the challenge.
Here is a picture of what was used in 1969 for connecting almost everything in the engine bay to the rest of the car harnesses before the 14 pin plug in 1970 and beyond.

The multiple 6 pin connectors on the passenger side of the rear engine compartment are what he needs to connect some of the wiring of his 3.6 to.
Thus the need to adapt.

The '69 rear fuse panel:

I'm interested in this too!
Would like to know how to adapt the 3.6 harness into a 69.

14 pin or multiple 6 pin, the connections in the 69 are just divided between multiple 6 pin connectors.

I imagine you want to retain the the female 6 pin connectors if / when you ever wanted to restore the car back to its original motor? That was my thought so I retained the original wiring in the car and made all the modifications on the 3.6's side. You can buy male 6 pin connectors from the dealer or find an old harness to cut up.

What year 3.6 motor and how much of the harness do you have? If you want to make it a bit cleaner you could acquire a used rear fuse / connector panel from the year of the motor and make all the connectors run through that. All the basis connections are there, ie starter, alternator, tach, etc.

The injection and ignition run off a separate harness and brain that will more than likely need to be mounted under a seat with the harness routed up to the left side of the engine compartment, power coming from the ignition switch and battery.

It seems a bit overwhelming at first, but if you take your time and have access to wiring diagrams it's pretty straight forward.

Ok, I've got my Patrick Motorports harness. It's pretty plug and play, but I still have to adapt the engine loom to my multiple 6 pin setup in the 69.

Here's the harness as a whole:

And with the Patrick kit plugged in:

Two questions: on the Patrick kit, what is this supposed to plug into?

And, in the engine compartment, my Harness has this chunk of wires clipped off. I'm assuming it's what's needed for my three sets of 6 pins in the back of the engine compartment, and the rest of the plugs will plug into the engine harness.

Any insight is appreciated.

@timmy, I'm not sure if there's enough time to send the harness back to you, have you make it, then have it back here in time for an install this week. I should just fly you down here to help. Ever been to San Diego?

Next question: I'm getting ready to drill my chassis for the DME (How are you guys doing that, btw? Step up drill bit?) and mount it to prepare for the engine install. Wondering if there's anything I can remove from the DME and harness to simplify the install and not have spare wires all over the place.

I drilled for my harness with a hole saw.

I think I would try to keep the DME in the engine bay if I hadn't already made the hole.... It would have made for a cleaner and easier install keeping all the wires, connectors and relay out of the coupé.

You woud on the other hand get a long harness to hide, but I think that is doable easy.

I used a hole saw also.....just did it a few weeks ago.......looked at my 993 to see were it entered the interior. I seriously considered what Magnus mentioned, keeping it all in the engine bay. However, ultimately made the decision based on not wanting the extra wiring (guessing about 4 feet) to deal with in addition to running A/C lines (using a 993 condenser in the front left).

On the advice of Sal (Scarceller), I opted to mount the DME in a vertical position so as to reduce jarring solder joints on the circuit board. In addition, the cabin interior is a more friendly environment compared to the engine compartment.

I used a Greenlee chassis punch to create the harness opening. The DME is shock-mounted on the vertical wall in front of the rear passenger seat.

The install is at a standstill at this point due to other project priorities. Thus, I'm at the same point as some of you guys.

Hope this helps,
Sherwood

Sorry for the vertical pic - I made a steel panel (bent edges down and welded at corners) for the ECU, DME, and other harness pieces. It sits below the drivers seat and is elevated from the floor with spacers.

I think you are correct about your bundle of wires...I'd try to get the proper harness to wire that into to make it easier to remove the motor in the future. My '96 motor had a funky plug like the one you show - I think that is used for things like A/C. I used a Timmins kit and didn't need to use that plug but I can check tonight when I get home.

I used a step drill bit and pulled the harness through close to where Sherwood did. My harness had a factory grommet to seal it up.
