Dumb question...what's a smuggler's box

All,

This is a dumb question, but I am new to the 911 world. What's a smuggler's box? Where is it located?

thanks,
anthony

It's in the trunk. Pul up the carpeting and you'll see a trap door behind the fuel tank.

It was used to hold A/C components over the years. It was given the name "smugglers box" after many a gold chain totin' furry chested dude tried to break on to the scene of Miami Vice with 15 Kilos of Cocaine hidden in the compartment.

If you lift up the carpet in the front trunk, you will notice a hatch near the firewall. That is the smugglers box. If your car has A/C, there are usually A/C components in the smugglers box (either the receiver or the dryer, I think).

Steve, the receiver/dryer is a canister located in the left front fender of A/C equipped 911s. The evaporator unit is in the smuggler's box, with a condenser on the front undercarriage and another on the decklid, with the compressor on the right side of the engine bay. Hoses going everywhere

All those answers are wrong. The smuggler's box is for storing porn.

you have a little tiny bed in yours too???

I found dogfood when replacing floorpan in front. Rodent entered through the fuel filler door, and went down inbetween the fender and the double wall down in there.

This all makes me want to dig into this over the weekend to see if there is anything in there responsible for my lousy A/C performance.

I figured I was wrong. I didn't actually know which component of the A/C was in the smugglers box, so I just started listing off components I knew. Thanks for the clarification.

Out of interest, Right Hand Drive cars don't have a smugglers box FWIW

Why would they make a right hand drive 911? That's just wrong. Where is the fuel fill? On the wrong side, I bet.

That's like a left-handed Strat. Just wrong.

Wrong? It messes with my mind when I see all your cars over there in Left Hand Drive! I have to use photoshop and "flip" the image just so it makes sense to me

Fuel fill is on the passenger side. Means the passenger breathes the majority of the fumes when the fuel filler leaks

Engine lid pull is also on that side. Don't get me started!
