What is the part below the crankshaft pulley?

This is what looks like a plastic piece that is held on by 3 nuts.
My question is should I reseal this area with just a sealant or just a gasket or combination of both?
If I need a sealant what type?

That is an aluminum cover and has a gasket. It covers the end of the inermediate shaft.

I guess you could use sealant but I would use the gasket with sealant.

I used Curil T as extra protection with the gasket

Any other sealant suggestions, or is Curil T the only one to use?
I watched the Tom Amon video and he used some sort of sealant in a red tube.

There is a whole thread on what sealants to use and where on the engine rebuilding forum.

Curil T works well. I'd go with that.

Meanwhile... Did you know (in an emergency) you can use plain old fruit jam as a sealant for gaskets?

Any particular fruit you would recommend, maybe some pectin, I would think?

Hey, Tony. Boy, oh boy, I never thought 574 would be so difficult to find. Just imagine I’ve been to: Napa, Carquest, AutoZone, WalMart, O’Reilly’s, Ace, Lowes, HomeDepot, and Harbor Freight. Nobody has it. I can order it in a large size, but I’ll never
use it, because up until today, I’ve never had a need for it.
There are many thread lock products especially from Permatex, but I don’t know what you would suggest I use, that I can get over the counter?

I used Threebond 1211 per the engine sealant thread.
I don't see the point of using Loctite 574 on it unless you skip the gasket, as 574 is a metal to metal anerobic flange sealant... why some people use it on case halves and cam towers.

Threebond 1211 is silicone based, so could probably substitute regular old gray permatex ultra and be just fine.

I don't think they even sell 574 in the small tubes like thread locker. 50mL seems to be the smallest, for $25-30.

Found some at a fastener store. Didn't have it in stock so had to ship in from another store, so will be picking it up tomorrow morning. Cost for 50ml = $20.60.
