915 problem -- stuck in reverse?

I'm posting this as a new thread, since I have a problem, but the title of the thread I replied to was "915 problem fixed!"

Symptoms: rebuilt 915 with zero miles on it. No lube in it yet.

Bolted everything back up, I seem to have gears 1 thru 4, but I can't move the shifter into the 5/r plane.

Was reading...maybe its stuck in reverse. Fix by pushing on the pin under the reverse switch on the trans.

Ok. I took my reverse switch off and there's no pin in there.

Is there supposed to be a pin?

Where can I get one?

I put the shank of a 5/8 drill bit in there and tried to lever it while rocking the wheels...no joy for me. But I was not being aggressive with it.

Any thoughts or ideas?

See attached pic...no pin.

Hmm, there should be a pin. Did someone forget?
When you selected reverse, did the light come on?
You do need to be aggressive with the "pin" if you want to knock it back.

Car has no battery at the moment, so can't test reverse. We are in final bolt up and pre flight check mode here.

Want to get all the gears before I put oil in it and fire this thing up.

How much force are we talking. I have a 2' square shank screwdriver. Is that what we are talking about?

Update. There was a pin. But it was buried deep in there.

Did the coupler adjustment many times. Still no joy.

I can rotate one output shaft or the other, but not both in the same direction. Is that an indication its stuck in gear?

Take off the inspection port and look inside while having someone rotate the stick side to side. You should be able to see the selector rod move the fork selection pin between the different forks.

If you can't go into the 5/R plane, then you'll probably see that one of those gears is engaged. In other words, you'll see that the rod holding the 5/R fork is moved one way or the other but the selection pin isn't in the slot on that rod. That will show you which gear it is stuck in. You may even be able to get it out of that gear using a screw driver through the inspection port.

Did you get to see the inside of it when it was open? Once you've seen it apart in front of you, what you see through the port will make a lot more sense.

When you have the problem of the 915 locking in reverse or between reverse and 5th the problem is in the worn bushings in the trans selector in the rear seat access.

Are you sure that it is 5th and reverse that it won't go into?
Really, REALLY try the shift coupler adjustment again. See if you can adjust it all the way over so that 5th and reverse can engage (i.e. forget about 1st or 3rd). You will know it is in reverse when the pin pushes outward (toward the front of the car). If you can find that plane, then you have a starting point for your adjustment.
I went through the same fun and games recently. The coupler adjustment is very very sensitive.

Well I forgot to mention a few things.

1) new coupler whisperer bushing on the coupler.

2) I have a rennshifter. I have to look and see if shift adjustment is the same with a rennshifter, or if there are any differences. I don't see why it would change but who knows.

I think I may have all 6 gears, but its centering in the 5/r plane. In other words when I think I'm in 3, I'm really in 5. Tough to say for sure, it I think I can get into 3 planes.

Have to go get kids from school, will try more tonight.

Pretty sure this is a coupler mis-adjustment issue. Doesn't sound like stuck in reverse to me, and I have experienced both.

Well it was both.

First it was in 2 gears. Some wiggling and authority fixed that.

Then, it was 100% me being a fool. The jwest docs clearly differ in their adjustment procedure...put the thing in third, loosen coupler, put stick where 3rd should be, tighten coupler, done.

I have all my gears. Fluids are in. Clutch adjusted.

Tomorrow I fire this baby up after a 6 month nap!

Congratulations! You fixed it yourself and learned something new. Let us know how the new shifting experience feels.
