Question Simple brake upgrade?

Morning - what's the simplest brake upgrade to do on a 73 911s?

Zimmerman drilled rotors and better (softer?) pads?

I did dba drilled rotors and ferodo pads on my LR Defender and it was an amazing difference from stock.

What brake caliper do you have in front now? Is it iron or aluminum?

What problem are you having that requires an upgrade?

Assuming you have the 3.5" spacing aluminum S calipers, I would imagine Carrera calipers would be an easy upgrade.

Having said that, I'm not sure I would "upgrade" a '73 S unless you really need to.

I'm only talking about upgrading easily interchangeable/replacement parts.

Calipers up front are the aluminum S type. Not interested in changing calipers - just rotors and pads.

Are you tracking the car? I have used Textars and now have Ferodo 2500s in my car. Stock rotors, S calipers. I ran a DE at Laguna Seca last month and the brakes were great. I have ventilation ducts FWIW. Haven't ran the Textars on the track, only autocrossed with them, couldn't tell much difference between them an the Ferodos in that situation. Either pad needs to be warmed up to work well. When cold it feels like I have no brakes.

Stock is fine don't put drilled rotors on it, the 911 thru 964 rotors are not designed for holes and any that are out into them will only weaken them and cause premature replacement.

There are lots of good pads out there most like Pagid and Textar will dust up a lot, The best non dusting pads I ever used were the old Repco Metal Masters which I think are now called Axis Metal Masters but there may be newer non dusting pads.

for street use ATE 200 is great, just flush the system annually. for track use the early 911s are light enough that the brakes aren't really thermally stressed too much but if you do track good fluid is cheap insurance, Castrol SRF is the best and most expensive Motul 600 is a slightly less expensive option that I use on my track cars.

If you are still having trouble w/ brake temps the next step up that is used by the serious tracks guys(note this bumps you a racing class)is to use '84-89 Carrera 3.2 front rotors and calipers. These are the same as you '73 but 24mm thick vs 20mm on a 73 and the calipers are iron instead on your Aluminum S calipers. The stiffer iron is appreciated by most users. leave the rears stock.

Zimmerman rotors (not drilled) and Ferodo pads, and of course fresh fluid and flush every year. I swapped out my aluminum S calipers for iron A's. Less flex in the caliper and firmer pedal. Stops like a champ.

Cooling air to front discs - how much help??

I know this is difficult to quantify, but I am curious as to how much benefit to expect from the installation of a front brake cooling duct set up, (including the block off plate).

74 coupe with PMB calipers, new: zimmermans, SS lines, bearings, MC, refreshed suspension.

I know it won't help controllability until things really heat up, (hard mountain driving/track).

Does this even approach the later 24 mm disc upgrade??

For DEs and racing you will want cooling ducts. For AX or street, I doubt you can get them hot enough to notice.

I ordered the Ferodo sets from this guy, got them 32 days ago, last week Marco tried to install them and he sent the wrong ones. So Marco had to put something he had in, and this guy won't get me the right set because I got them 32 days ago, not 30.

Beware to hurry up and see if he sent you the right stuff if you order from him.
