3.2 engine oil thermostat?
Ok,
Rummaging around in the manual, could not determine the level of disassembly necessary to replace the engine mounted thermostat. Opine! eric

Thanks guys!
I was wondering how much intake stuff removal is necessary? My car never gets up to 180F/80C, the manual says that the thermostat is set to open at the above temp. I was thrashing about the shop, measuring the dogs butt temp and decided to backdate the gauge system. I removed the temp gauge from the '75, and the oil pressure gauge too. Swapped the senders from engine to engine and now I have numbers to refer too when I look at the gauge. Found an intake tube nut loose, tightened that sucker down and the idle hunting is officially gone. Good stuff! Thanks eric

Thermostat test........
Eric,
If you decide to pull and test the engine thermostat, you might as well test the auxiliary thermostat too. A simple water bath test could determine the operation of these thermostats. If I remember correctly the engine thermostat operates @ 176°F(??). While auxiliary thermostat operates @ 186°F. For peace of mind, I like to see these thermostats open & close during tests and install them knowing they work. Tony |

Reviving this older thread to ask the question: Does the thermostat have a preferred orientation given that the two openings are at different levels?

Yes, the mounting holes are offset so you can't put it in the wrong way though.
