AC Compressor Shaft Seal Leak - Fix

Got a Sanden AC compressor that’s about 10 years old. Walked away from car the other day and heard hissing from engine area. Opened lid and watched clutch plate on compressor rotate about 2mm and hissing stopped. Called it a blown shaft seal and dove in.

There's only a few parts to get off before getting to the seal. Single shaft nut is removed and clutch plate pries off. Next, a woodruff key, sponge, and “C” clip. Am told sponge (below) serves to soak up any slight refrigerant/oil leak. My leak was more than minor so sponge is soaked. Will dry it out as best as possible before reinstall. Need to be careful with this as sponge material is separating from it's ring.

Seal is last out. (Will use hooked pick to grab seal on it's inward facing lip.)

Old and new seals. Check out the rubber that contacts shaft. (We're looking at side of seal that faces front of car.)

Borrowed “special tool” used to install seal over step on shaft---step is pointed to below. Basically, shaft of tool aligns with step on shaft so once seal is on tool, it's easily pushed off the tool and into position on compressor's shaft.

Tool in position without seal riding on it. (Not sure if seal will go on correctly / easily without using tool.)

New seal in place with C clip. Here you can see the lip on the seal (pointed to) that allows extraction of seal… the hooked pick or similar goes behind this lip to pull seal out. Sponge... woodruff... clutch plate and nut. Takes about 10 minutes to do this fix.

Pulled vacuum and left it for 1 hour. Results below. Will do "Godzilla evac" (CG evac) followed by dry hose liquid charge of 26 weighed ozs of 134. (This is a 3 condenser system.) This weight was determined optimal for this AC config during last year's "AC expedition." Will add 3/4 oz of PAG.

OK, so it is easy if you have access to the special tool. Just where does one find that tool?

Glen... am thinking either an AC place or a tool specializer like MAC. I just Googled it and saw one for under $4. Am not sure if all compressor shafts are same diameter with same step dimension so may be variations of tool.

I was wondering if you have recharged and did the new seal fix the leak?
