Who makes rebuild kits

Can someone tell me some different companies that make rebuild kits. Which ones are good, which are not. What is a reasonable price for one? Any info would be great. I know of motor meister and ebsracing (it seems ebsracing.com link is gone???)

I got all mine from Pelican, plus they do a bang up job on tech advice.....to me it was worth it!!!!..

as far as a machine shop, I have no advice...I am in Ohio.

i'm sure that pelican can put together a "kit" for you. all "kits" may not be created equally. find out what you get from those kit suppliers, and what the brand names are, and then compare.

Kits are inevitably a bad idea, as you generally get parts that you don't need, and don't get some parts that you do need. We have everything that you need, and can customize a package for you, often at less than a 'kit' would cost. This is because you're not paying for something you don't need.

We will be offering kits in the near future, but they will be highly specialized bundles (or lists) that will be based upon what you actually need. Like a bottom-end kit, a top-end kit, and an injection kit.

So I guess what your saying is that I should wait to order the individual parts that I need until I have everything completly dismantled. I looked at the list of parts that motor meister has and it seems quite exstensive. This is the list they give.

Are you saying that more that likely I won't need alot of these parts. I will obviously need an entire engine gasket set, and I would think that rings are an essential as well. Don't gasket sets alone cost nearly $500?

For what it is worth, I would pound my balls flat with a wooden mallet before I bought anything from MM.

Wayne is correct about kits. You will inevitably be short on something and long on something else. Take care to make sure everything is compatible as well.
I suspect Wayne can help with that.

As a newbie to this bb could you please sugest the best brand of wooden mallet

I suspect my car to have a blown exaust valve. If this is about the maximum extent of the damage.. could someone give me a guesstamite of what it will cost me in engine rebuild parts.

Exactly what do you mean by "blown" exhaust valve? Do you have zero compression on one cylinder only? Does your engine still turn over? Is the valve bent? broken? What about the piston? cylinder? How many miles on the engine. Just WHAT WERE YOU DOING when you "blew" this valve? and so on..
Tell us more details, and we can be more help. Friends don't let friends do MM...

For example, in the kit that you just mentioned, they include rings for KS cylinders - there are no such rings for Alusil cylinders - only Nikasil. You can use the Nik rings on the Alusil cyls, but there's a 50-50 chance you'll have to tear apart your engine again (not good).

Also valve guides? Who installs their own valve guides? The machine shop will do this.

This seems to be standard gasket set with some guides and rings tossed in. In the near future (if you can wait that long), I will have extensive kits for rebuilding that will directly follow along side of the new engine rebuild book...

That list/pricing is nothing to shout about. You should be able to do better at Pelican or race shops who turn over a high volume of these parts and aren't completely FOS. I wouldn't even buy muffler bearings from MM.

Ouch! That hurt just reading about it.

Wayne's advice seems very good. I think the Pelican folks can help you figure out which gaskets and parts you will need, so just buy those parts. Once in there, you will surely find a need for some things you had not planned. Engine rebuild jobs take more than a day or two, so you may end up with more than enough time to assemble parts.

i didn't see any valves in that top end list. or sprockets, or idler supports, or cam oil lines, or tensioners, or head gasket o rings, (the copper ones are cylinder base gaskets), or muffler gaskets. see what i mean. there's really no "kit", you teardown and order what you need, over and above the gasket set. and no, the gasket set is not $500. way less.

Kolbenschmidt! I was so happy when I found out they were producing pistons (in their own plant) for the vintage BMW mc's.
There was a time when all you could get were Italian made pistons that didn't expand quite right. Seized engines were the order of the day unless you made the tolerances sloppy. Then you got slap until they warmed up. Real nice.

Mainly because I wanted to spend the PCA $100 certificate, I ordered the genuine Porsche top-end gasket set (P# 930 100 907 03) from my local stealer.

While I have absolutely no complaints about the quality of the set (and the price was not that bad either), there are some things in it I will not use (CIS parts??), and other things I thought should have been included, that were not. Maybe "kits" are not such a great idea after-all.

Never having any experience with the company itself (thanks again and again to the free exchange of information!!), I would not buy anything from a company with a a repeat history of flagrantly ethically and legally screwing of the customer.

Perhaps the Motor Meister board would provide you with that information :- )
