poor transition from idle in 69 E

Well the trip back from michigan went very well. Went through 2 quarts of oil (flywheel seal leaks like a collander) but besides that the car ran very well with good power and mileage.

However, about halfway through the trip, I started to have problems starting out in first - the car would hesitate and "bog down" with an occasional backfire before accelerating smoothly. It would also backfire when shifting between first and second.

Also, the car is very unhappy starting in the cold. We used starting fluid in Michigan and Ohio but I did get it started this morning without it, although it took a while with some backfiring as well. Additionally, the car refuses to advance beyond 1500 rpm until it has warmed up for a while and it shuts off when you downshift (I pulled up the throttle lever part way to eliminate this problem). The cold start mechanism is not connected.

In any case, I had a full tune up (valve adjust, cap rotor, plug wires, plugs, all filters, timing set, MFI adjusted, etc.) before I left. Compression was good on all cylinders but one (125 with the rest at 150 - have not checked them since I got home) and the CO was at 4% at idle according to the mechanic who set it up. Although the shop did not drain the tank (car sat for two years, last owner put fuel in it a few months ago), I ran three or four tanks of premium with one bottle of Techron on the way home.

My question, where do I go from here. Should I go for a full tune up again or do my symptoms suggest a particular adjustment (like the points)?

Thanks for any and all pointers.
Rich

if that gas sat for 2 years I'd sugest a change of the fuel filter and the screen at the bottom of the gas tank. I'm sure it'll have some junk in there. Other than that I'm not qualified to say, my car doesn't even run yet

Rich first thing you need to do on here is learn how to use the search function. Tons of good info that you might not find otherwise. Here are some good threads to start with:
Early car cold start problem
Product Review: Gunson Gas Tester
And of course the tech article that is the bible of MFI:
