I bought 12 quarts of Bead penn motor oil for my 87 Carrera based on various pelican users. (DID NOT USE IT YET...)
I NOW see that it carries a warning detrimental to Catalytic converters... Please advise what does that mean? will it reduce the effectiveness of the cat? or...? How come so many pelicans swear by it? |

When the car companies realized that too much zinc MAY kill cats, and the car companies were on the hook to ensure car remains emissions legal (but not necessarily having running engines) they changed the Specs for motor oils.
The new specs are low in zinc and will not kill cats. The new specs are low in zinc and MAY kill engines Brad Penn put the zinc back in. Cat owners be warned

Yes, lower ZDDP oil happened in the mid 2000s due to new type, cheaper, cat converters. The old type converters used in our air cooled Pcars are AOK. After all, virtually all oils pre mid 2000s had high ZDDP and were used with no problems to cat converters since the 70s. Meaning the cat converter in your '87 Carrera is not at risk at all, in fact it has been exposed to high ZDDP for 20+ years since new. Here's from a ZDDP info site: When first introduced, catalytic converters contained things like platinum and palladium, which were expensive to buy, and have continued to become more expensive as the years have gone by. Due to this, the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) changed the composition of catalytic converters to make them less costly. And with that change came the need to reduce the levels of sulfur, phosphorus, and zinc in motor oils because they will eventually destroy catalytic converters on new cars built with the new materials. When the EPA mandated that ZDDP be removed from all conventional and synthetic oils produced domestically that sought to meet the GF-4 specification, apparently no thought was given to what might happen to older engines that require ZDDP.

When I put the stock headers back on my '89 earlier this year, I put a new 50 state cat I bought from our host here. I just had an oil change with BP actually.....should I switch to a different oil or should it be ok? I kept the old cat just in case too!

I use the Brad Penn and it seems to work A-OK. If my cat causes issues, I'll remove it. No smog check on 24+ year old vehicles here, God Bless Texas.

The EPA a while back forced car makers to increase the emissions warranty to 150,000 miles. The longer warranty required a reduction of ZDDP to ensure a full service life under warranty. Compare the cost of Cat replacement to a top end rebuild a decide which one you would rather pay for in the first 150,000 miles.

Do remember that cats have been in cars since the late '70's. The warning only appeared in the last 5-10 years. Check the Ultimate Oil thread for the full story.

Cats are cheap compared to a top end rebuild...pick your poison.

Move out of the cess pools we now call cities, and live where you are free. I have a 911 SC and an 84 Carrera. Neither have had cats since 2011 and 2013 respectively. Move to a non-communist part of the country!
