Throttle Linkage Troubleshoot

OK so short story is my throttle linkage broke so I sadly have no gogo. The linkage is fine all the way through the firewall and the linkage is fine from the "box" tucked way up under the deck lid, far left, to the throttle body so my guess is the issue is how the linkage terminates inside that "box" I have attached a photo of the "box"

I have searched everywhere trying to figure out what is inside there. It looks like a beast to get out given where it is. There are screws on a top cover plate but it appears even if I get them out I won't be able to remove the plate because of the support structure around it. I am stymied and the driving season is coming to an end for me. Do anyone even know what this is called so I can search on it or know how to fix my issue? 1988 Cab

All my searches on broken throttle cable and such have all be before the firewall and idle issues and such

If you are talking about the black cable, that is your Cruise Control Cable, the other end wold be connected to your throttle body. Please post that one.

I have annotated the photo to show the "box" I am referring to. The black cable coming out runs to the throttle body. My assumption is inside that box is some sort of interface that has both the pedal accelerator and also the cruise control and one or the other will then actuate the cable running to the throttle body. I assume the accelerator pedal linkage terminates in there somehow? I am looking to understand whats in there and how do I get in there.

If this is your 88 3.2L, the "accelerator pedal linkage" starts from the pedal (pivot point 1) thru the tunnel to the bell housing (pivot point 2) to the top of the engine (pivot point 3) and up to the throttle body (final pivot point).

Your item marked in green is your Cruise Control Servo. It is possible the internal mechanism may have failed causing the Black cable to be stuck which in turn will hinder the throttle lever from moving freely.

You may want to remove it to see if the component is jammed up some how.

If you are okay without a cruise control feature to get her running, you can disengage the black cable from the TB.

OK well then possibly I am all screwed up then. Here is my issue. The accel pedal does nothing. car starts and idles but the throttle cable is broken somewhere. It is solid viewed all the way on left side of trans up through the firewall on the left side. Since I couldn't see where it was supposed to come up and the "black cable" you mention is going to the throttle body I assumed the main throttle cable and the cruise servo were linked together in that "box" Possibly I am all wrong. If that is the case then when the main throttle cable comes through the fire wall where does it connect to? Know of anywhere where I can get a pic. the black cable running to the throttle cable (the cruise cable as you have indicated works fine and is free.) I just have a floppy dead pedal with no go. thanks for your help

Yes, Let me post my Tutorial. BRB.

Here you go: THE FIX: Binding Accelerator, NOT Pedal or Bell Housing BUSHINGS, not even @ Tunnel

This is a fix for a sticky throttle, but it will also guide you to see where it has disengaged or caught up.

it goes here thru the fire wall, pivot point 3.

That ball cap is connected to the rod to the bell hosing. The other side has yet another ball cap with a short rod connecting to the TB mechanism.

There's no throttle cable just a straight rod that connects the pedal to the throttle housing with bell cranks ( sockets and posts). Check the back of your accelerator pedal to see if the rod is connected there. If it is then the socket may have popped off the throttle housing or the assembly that's on top of the engine shroud.

Thanks guys I will check as soon as I get home. It is possible that the ball socket popped off as I didn't see it at all. The only connection I saw was the cable connecting to the cruise control. When you say rod I guess I would call mine a very stiff wire more so than a rod from the bell housing up through the firewall. I am hoping it is as simple as reattaching and go. Are there tricks to popping those ball sockets on and off?

Yes, it does look like a thick coat hanger wire with a loop on one end but the pic above is the end of it with a ball socket/cap.

The ball socket if original, will or should have a locking pin on the side, if not, get one so it will not pop out in the future or you can use a thin paper clip and insert it.

The trick is, make sure it is straight so it can be popped off the inner ball, at an angle the locking tension ring inside will not release. If you force it on an angle it will damage the tension locking ring.
