Question 911SC Catalytic Converter

Time for CA smog test again. The SC's current cat has well over 100K miles on it, so its time to replace it. Got to keep those NOx in check.

Pelican lists two Catalytic Converters for our '79 911sc, PN-930-113-230-25:
OEM $1694
DEC $492

Has anyone here purchased and used the DEC Catalytic Converter?
Good experience?
Bad experience?

I just found on-line, a MagnaFlow replacement Cat for the SC too, $170.
Anyone here have experience with a MagnaFlow replacement Cat?

Thanks,

I have 2 magnaflow cats for my 3.6 conversion done on 84 chassis. I am in Oregon but just passed DEQ smog test. The first test, it didn't pass with high CO but I went in again after 20min 4000rpm cruise and it passed with flying colors.

I'll give you the cat off my 3.2 (32k on it) if you can help me find a pre-muffler... It passed California emissions about 2.5 years ago at 26k.

Enough people toss their Sc/Carrera cats that you should be able to get a used, but servicable factory cat, for pretty cheap. Put an ad on the used parts forum and do a search of it.

i posted this a couple of days ago, can't say it sparked too much interest.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360094524106&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&viewitem=

i keep reading the 100 cell metal cats are free flowing, at least a lot better than the 20+ year old ceramic parts, i would be very interested in hearing opinions about the company and the product.
maybe this time

Follow up post, FYI:

The D.E.C. OEM Catalytic Converter I bought from Pelican was easy to install, it fit perfectly.

And it did it's job. The 911SC passed the CA smog check easily with it's original 322,600 mile engine.

Not that I'd expect much, but did you notice any performance improvement?

I'm debating replacing my CAT or just giving in to SSIs. My vehicle doesn't have to meet emmission standards (Texas plates FTW), so thats not an issue.

No change in performance or exhaust note. The car ran and sounded the same.

I've used DEC cats.

They do work, but in my experience, they have only the fraction of the longevity of the original cats. Like 25,000 miles v. 125,000-175,000 miles.

i have a bypass pipe in a box. when the time comes, i will take it in and have a muffler shop weld a hi-flow cat in line. i bet i get out less than $200. i know another car that has it done, and it passes CA smog easily.

I see you are in CA ...

Just throwing this out there ... Don't shoot the messenger.
NO used CAT is legal ...PERIOD
Aftermarket CATS must be listed by the BAR as approved or is theoretically illegal in CA .

Now most techs don't know this or really care, But the CA law = MUST be oem OR officially approved.

check out

Read the fine print on the vendor ... Racing or "off road" use only.
I'll dig up the law and post.
This I've heard to be true. The old system right up until recently allowed companies to submit products to CARB for testing and approval for highway use. Perhaps the companies that did pay for the tests and certification are still allowed to sell the product they submitted for a time frame.

I know my DEC from Pelican came with no warning about "off road use only." WhyTF would I want a cat on an off road car?

I have the Magnaflow Catalytic Converter 45419, I purchased it direct here. Magnaflow Catalytic Converter 45419, I have no comlaints with this cat I passed emissions and got not engine code errors so Im happy. You would not believe what the dealer wanted to charge me for this thing. Definately buy online and put it on your self its way cheaper.

I am working on a header system for the 911 that includes a CAT and have looked into the various laws.
In January CA changed their laws making anything other than OEM illegal for use. If you check the various aftermarket sites for CATs you will see NONE are now for sale for use in California.

Why? Just because?

Most cats are just fine for well over that milage. Sometimes double that milage.

Or have you had it checked and it failed? Hell an SC will often pass the analysis without a cat (not the visual, though).

Just wondering why you're changeing it.
