How to compress chain tensioner to install
I'm trying to replace a chain tensioner, I compress the piston slowly with C clamp, but as soon as I remove piston pops up immediately.
How do I get it to stay so I can slide it in |

once its compressed slide a nail or awl or any other small metal rod into the hole in the side of the tensioner, it holds the tensioner in the compressed position. once you have the tensioner installed just pull the tool out of the hole and it will expand.

The tensioner is held compressed with a pin for removal and install.
This page has a good description: Part 1 of 2 - Replacing Oil Seals, Gaskets, and Leaky Plumbing in ’85 3.2 Here is the picture showing the pin... ![]()

The above is for the oil fed carrera units. The old style reservior tensioners are compressed in a vise, slowly, with 1/2 of the top of the shaft sticking up above the vise jaws so a holding tool can be slipped onto the tensioner as the vise is released. You can make a tool by bending a strip of metal to the proper shape. Basically two 90 degree bends at the ends. I_____I
