Feedback on digital WUR
Just found out about the UTCIS-V product (unwiredtools.com), which seems to be some sort of digitally controlled (and programmable) warm-up regulator.
It seems a good idea with lots of potential, but... has anyone had any real experience with it ?? |

I use the slightly different model on my turbo and it works well so far - after about 6 months of use. I'm planning to upgrade soon to add a wide band O2 sensor so I can map my AFR across the entire rpm and manifold pressure range.
You can also have your stock WUR converted to a manually adjustable WUR by Brian Leask - you'll have to web serach his URL.

Digital WUR
I have been interested in this product, but haven't run across anyone who actually has one.

I've gone ahead and ordered one for my 74-engined 911S with the older type WUR. I have high hopes for it but I'll post details as soon as I get it - should be soon, but I'm not in the US.

I've installed the UTCIS - it was very easy and came with the fittings for the 74 WUR already attached courtesy of Tom at Unwired Tools. The only problem is that I don't think it's getting enough voltage - I checked all my live leads in the engine bay and they're only registering 11.5 volts when the battery is at 12.6. I need to sort this out as I can't seem to program the UTCIS with new warmup settings till that happens.
More info as soon as I have it, but in general it's still very promising and has been easy to understand... Thomas

Still no connection my friend, the guys from unwired are helping but we've established that it has something to do with windows vista rather than the utcis.
Stay tuned, hope to solve this next weekend...

Ok, I've hooked up the UTCIS and I can safely say, it pretty much does what it promises: I can set the warm-up cycle fuel pressure profile to be whatever I want using the unwired tools software. This takes a few seconds to do and then the car is ready to start and test again. Using small corrections, any CIS that was truly suffering from an incorrectly operating WUR is now completely tunable by a non-expert. Yes, this is not an original component but if your WUR is NLA then this is a great solution. It also produces nice output data so if you don't have a pressure gauge, you can still tune your CIS. What can I say, I like it.

So, apart from the software issues, would you say that the whole installation and tuning was fairly easy ?

I had the same experience as thomastee. Install is easy, setup is fairly easy as well. The only real hiccup I've had is that it doesn't get cold enough here in L.A. overnight for me to setup the cold start properly just yet, but that isn't any fault with the UTCIS. On modded / hot-rod motors on CIS like mine, the digital WUR is worth its weight in gold.

I have one on my 930. They are good units.
And you get your control pressure data without stuffing around with gauges etc. UT are very helpful. It is a very versatile product and constantly improving. There is a very looong thread on it on the 930 board - been going for a year or two. Alan

I've now yanked the UTCIS out from my car and gone with a refurbed WUR as the unit stopped regulating pressure and I got no reply to my emails from Unwired Tools. An expensive lesson learned...

I have been dealing with Unwired Tools for a little over a year. Having purchased a UTCIS-V to solve a regulator problem on a 1978 911 SC CIS problem and the experience has been extremely frustrating and to date the "Warranty Replacement" promised by Frank Ableson has yet to be shipped despite three dozen emails promising to ship. Promise after promise and no replacement unit.

Good luck with that.
The most promising "digital WUR" that I've seen lately has details here: Digital WUR plus? ( FrankenCIS ) I have no affiliation and have not tried one yet (but am very tempted) - just passing this along for review by others. |

Please up date this post when you have the UTCIS-V installed. I am thinking of going the same route with my '83SC and would be interested in your opinion on the product. Cheers, John
