Windscreen Washer problem fixed but what's this outlet for on the headlamp washer
The windscreen washers on my '78SC stopped working again. I had a leak from the headlamp washer (see later) and decided to check them out while in there. Previously I had bought a new pump (replacing a non Porsche type one) to fix the problem but now realise that I hadn't really solved the problem. There was a blockage somewhere in the system. I tracked it down to the check valves just under each nozzle. The check valve was moving up under pump pressure but no water passing it . Here are some shots of it
![]() ![]() The second image shows the seal face up. This part acts like a piston forced off its seat by pump pressure; the spring forces it back again when the pump stops. But for water to get to the nozzle it must pass the sides of this seal. It seemed that over time the seal had expanded so decided to trim a little off the edge! And it now works. As non-working washers seems to be a common problem I thought I would share this with you. Now to the original problem; the leak. I found water coming out of a nipple on the headlamp washer, see photo: ![]() It's just visible on the outlet (bottom left) where the plastic outlet pipe is clamped. I have had the car 22 years but never noticed this before. So I put a piece of plastic pipe on it that I just happened to have but where should I connect the other end? It seems to me that water will gush out of there when the headlamp washer is activated. I have never used the headlamp washer as it didn't seem to work BUT having read some threads I now know that the headlamps have to be on. And sure enough, with the headlights on, water gushed out onto the floor as it seems the nozzles are not connected (the bumper was off a few years ago and I wasn't bothered about the body shop reconnecting them as I thought they didn't work. I could do with some shots from others of this area to see how things should look as I need to also know where the windscreen washer pump should be located.

Pump mounts to the front trunk bulkhead on rubber isolation pads. If everything functions and there are no leaks, leave the fitting alone.

Yes I know the screen washer pump bolts on to the front bulkhead but what are these rubber mounts? A picture would be useful of proper set up.
The headlamp washer pump is leaking out of that little grey nipple on the bottom left, part of the pump body. Where should I connect it to? Again a picture would be most useful of correct set up.

Rubber mounts are molded rubber pieces that push thru the wall of the chassis and also clip into the metal bracket on the washer pump.
If you go to Porsche's website, you can download the parts diagram that applies to your '78 SC by choosing the appropriate model and years from the dropdown boxes Porsche Genuine Parts Catalogue - Porsche Cars North America Here's the actual pdf document http://www.porsche.com/all/media/pdf/originalparts/en/E_911_83_KATALOG.pdf Page 467 shows the windshield washer + headlight washer diagram

Thanks Bob and Kevin. I think I can work it out from the photo and parts diagram. I certainly don't have it properly connected at the moment; I'm not using the t-piece (part no 19) nor the valve (part 35), though there is something looking like those parts lying around near the pumps . I'm picking up some parts at the local Porsche dealer tomorrow so can hopefully order those rubber mounts; worryingly that is part 18 on the diagram and part 18 doesn't appear in the list so may not be available. I have to say that I am amazed at what is available; tomorrow I am picking up those T-shaped screws and nuts/washers that hold in the engine lid grille for a grille that I just bought on ebay for my original engine lid, currently not on the car.
