The sidewalls on my 17s are still pretty large. I do see what your saying in 18" and larger. I had 18s on my 930. The 17s seem to be the sweet spot since 16" and 15" are getting harder and harder to find. Hell the only company that make my 17s is Continental in the sizes I use.

Tire usage/choice is unfortunately often driven by availability. If people ain’t buying a tire size/diameter, tire makers don’t make them. Just that simple. So it leaves us to seek out another size

That said, I respectfully disagree with Kent’s assessment in saying the suspension doesn’t work “at all” with tire diameters different from those sizes original to the car. The wheel sizes for the earliest cars were sized around the size of the brakes- you need a wheel big enough to clear the brakes and not much more than that. Plus, tire construction and materials have changed a ton since the 911 was first designed

My own experience with the suspension working has been good. My ‘79 car running 17” wheels was able to perform very well against good drivers with newer 993 cars running 18” tires. However there’s also guys running 15” Hoosiers in PCA stock class that are very fast cars. Those 15s run shorter sidewalls (275/35 rears) that bring down the ride height and also establish a higher effective gear ratio for faster acceleration due to greater torque multiplication. So it’s not as easy as saying these cars were designed for 14” & 15” wheels and anything else is less than optimum

Agree with Kevin, my experience is 95% track use (DE and Racing) and we started out with 31/24 TB's and 275/35 245/40 18's on our PCA Stock D SC's. We went to the max size TBs (35mm IIRC in the rear) and 275/35 15's and with the gearing advantage dropped track records across the board. The system worked well, as long as we kept the suspension movement and didn't lower the car too much all was well...

I guess what I'm trying to point out is the set ups with 2" sidewalls. To me all the suspension is "in the suspension". Old cars with (65-70) sidewalls had considerable give in the sidewall with somewhat stiffer suspension. Hence my feeling narrow sidewalls on an older car would be a stiffer ride on a street car.

I remember many years ago when my wife ran into a deep pothole and bent a rim. When I took the wheel to the tire shop and asked if it was possible to straighten the rim the shop said "NO". He also commented that since they came out with narrow sidewall tires he'd been making much more money replacing wheels than selling tires.

Ok the new larger fuelab filter is plumbed in. Waiting for tranny work then BOOM, in the car it goes. Then lower, align, corner balance and final tune of the carbs from Mike. I can almost see a small dot of light at the end of the tunnel.

Not the most exciting parts but the bearings came in for the tranny. All OEM of course.

Fairly recent dates on the bearings from 2012-2016. I got rod bearings last year from the dealer that were dated 2008!!!!

Another boring part....OEM windshield gasket for the now cracked windshield. The windshield man is on his way over here now, so we shall see.

Man the guys pulled it off! No more gaps in the corner to let water in! Bay Area Glass works came through! The cost was even better, FREE.

*Bonus-no more mirror puck on the windshield from the old glass mounted mirror!
