i definately want to grab this tranny!!...its a 95 6spd tranny, that i want to use in the furture when im ready in a 76 conversion...i know of patrick motorsports and how they do G50 conversions...but i want to use the 6spd tranny and they havent replied to any of my questions concerning usung the 6 spd instead of the 5...is it possible?if it is..i know i can make it work and i dont doubt my capabilites..but are there any design quirks that may prove making this conv. impossible or at least WAAY above and beyond practical (im not too practical myself, i tend to do things that dont make sense for the sake of saying i did it!)

Anything can be made to fit if you can fund the trial and error.
Of course, it may be an impossibility as 993s have a much different rear suspension system. If a 993 engine can fit a 915 transmission, then logic dictates that a 993 transmission should fit what I assume is a pre-EFI Porsche engine. I'd be very interested to find out if it's possible! Although I haven't personally installed a 6 Speed into any earlier car, I do know that many have made their way into 964 based cars with little difficulty...I would assume that it is not that big of a deal.

One factor with the G50 conversion is the fact that it's longer than a 915. Patrick Motorsports (and others?) make a shorter front nose housing that avoids having to update the torsion bar tube. So the questions will be:
How much longer is the 6-speed compared to a shortened G50 5-speed? How to mount to the chassis? How to adapt to existing axles? How to adapt to/change to proper shift housing? How to actuate clutch mechanism? How much heavier is it than the alternatives? What is the cost versus benefit ratio? Sherwood Lee |

Hmm...ok i know G50's have been put into pre G50 cars...(are these the 87-88 G-50's? or 964 based G50's as well?) if they are 964 based, then couldnt we say 6spds go into 964's...964 based g50's go into pre-89 cars..therefore a 6spd can be modified to fit my 76? i know i can do G50's, it been done quite a few times...but is the 6spd longer, shorter, fatter? making it a completely different affair than the 5 spd?

(as i understand the tranny was shortened to avoid mod'ing the torsion tubes, with them eliminated, it shortening still neccesary?) |

I understand that cutting out the torsion tube and going to coilovers is the most cost effective approach since it would eliminate the costly shortened tranny from Patrick.

I want to know if the 6-speed would fit into my 77. This could be a party waiting to happen. Some one must know about this. I can't accept that nobody can answer this, not on this site.

To fit the 6 spd. the torsion bar tube and sheet metal need to be removed. Coil over suspension and semi tube frame required.

sounds like a very involved (read as difficult and high $$$$) proposition. Why not a Ruf 5 speed or G50-50? ...... much easier project and one less gear to shift.
I really only red line the first few gears, then up shift into 5th anyway. Although it would be unique though... (I like unique stuff) steve 77 911S V8 ![]() |
