Rear Main Seal journal question

I'm replacing my rear main seal on a 3.0 and I saw that some of the sealant used to seal the two case halves together is on the seal journal as seen in the picture below. How would you guys go about cleaning this off? I'm not quite sure I want to use sand paper, but I could use 2000 grit or something like that and polish just that area.

Any ideas?
