Picked up a 76 Targa with a 3.2 and early CIS any Issues?

I picked up a 76 Targa with a what I think is a 3.2 (engine code 930/25) and an early CIS installed. Is this a good setup or does the original 3.2 setup produce more HP? Thanks

Provide the entire engine serial # and you can begin the id process.

It looks like that is an '88 3.2:

Good to know what it is for sure, thanks. Anybody know if there is much difference between the original setup and the earlier CIS as far as HP goes or would it be pretty minor if any?

There will be far more expert answers than the one I am about to give but here is my attempt at an answer:

The original engine for your car would be (most likely) a 3.0 with CIS but that depends when in 1976 the car was manufactured - someone will step in and be definitive here I am sure.

If you have a 3.2 from a Carrera then whether it has more power than the original set-up depends on whether the current CIS is well matched to the 3.2. In theory the 3.2 should be more powerful than the original 3.0 (or 2.7?) that should be in the car.

Cheers, Neil

That is weird. Your car would of come with a 2.7.

I don't know for sure if the 2.7 CIS intake set up would make more power on the 3.2 but....all else being equal I much prefer the EFI on the 3.2, it has far less moving parts to fail and its similar to modern EFI so better from a serviceability standpoint. I also suspect that with the chip tuning you can do with open exhausts etc. that you can get better performance and driveability with the motronic set up. However, I have had several 3.0 CIS cars that ran and performed very well.

Pull the Bosch part number off the WUR and Fuel Distributor and we will know which CIS you have. If it is in fact from a 2.7L and has not been modified it will not be adequate for 3.2L. If the manifolds are stock ID they would be very restrictive. It may start and run fine but will quickly get lean at higher rpm when the extra 18% hp capacity kicks in. The mixture must be set rich now to make it run properly. An AFR gage and will let you know quickly what the deal is.

I took the car out for a spirted drive today and it runs really well, cold start up was a little rough for a few minutes but it seemed to run well after that. Here are the WUR and fuel dist numbers.

The 3.2 induction is better.
That said, if it works fine now, why change?

I had a car set up just like this back in the day. I bought it with what was supposedly with a locked up 2.7. But I could see no sump plate on the bottom of the case. When I got it home, I was surprised, and happy to find , that somebody put a 3.2 carrera motor in , but retained the factory fuel injection, and ignition dist . It also was not locked up, just hydrolocked from the fuel dist being bad. Replaced it , and had it running the same day I brought it home
The car actually ran pretty good, but I remember it sort of running out of steam up over 5k. I assume the little cis from the 2.7 just could not flow enough fuel and air . It made a nice daily driver though.
It would be ideal to have the 3.2 induction back on it.

Great car! I'd source the 3.2 induction parts for your car so you can have all of the benefits of the 3.2 Motronic motor. Plus I think your car will be worth a bit more with a legit 3.2 under the hood.

Yes, I'm pretty sure that's a 2.7 fuel distributor. It looks like a -009 WUR.

If that were mine, I'd be looking at validating the soundness of the motor and then thinking about EFI. That would be a fun project.

Nice looking Targa - looks like you have a great find.

I'd spend a little more time trying to figure out what you have. Most CIS systems have intake runners that would be much smaller than what your engine would need and the US systems typically delivered a lot less fuel than a ROW system. The later systems that used an O2 sensor often run less than perfectly when some of that system is bypassed.

From your pictures, I can't really tell what you have, so maybe a little more investigation would help.

Of course, my suggestion would be to find someone selling a 3.2 intake system and buy the whole thing from him.

The -006 FD is from a 2.7L engine, so your entire CIS was likely retained from the stock engine.
The standard 2.7L CIS will not flow enough for the 3.2L, even with modifications. The FD capacity is too low and the runners too small. Essentially the engine has a governor on it. I would install an AFR meter just to be sure you are not running lean. If the engine runs well now it has likely been tuned rich to compensate for the extra 18% capacity. The upper RPM range is where it will choke off (you might check the exhaust, I bet that is the smaller 2.7L system as well).
If this were my 911 I would purchase and install the Carrera Motronic system (and heat exchangers if they are not Carrera) and fully enjoy the Carrera engine for a very fun car. You can keep all the stock looking CIS stuff to sell later with the car, it all looks very nice.
