Hood Support Struts

My front hood struts don't support the weight of my frunk hood (1983 SC) - they start drooping. So I thought I would replace the struts. Just received new struts from SunCoast - genuine Porsche parts (911 511 331 00).

My question is how much pressure should it take the compress these. Try as I might, I can't get them to push it, even slightly.

The Bentley manual says during install to 'while compressing strut slightly, ...' - so I'd rather not get that far before figuring out something is off with these?

Any guidance - thanks!

I thought I was clever buying the Porsche part rather than the Weltmeister from Pelican - but perhaps that was a mistake.

Struts weren't cheap - so need to know whether to send back.

No, you won't be able to compress them by hand. Once you get the bottom pin in, you'll have to lift the hood up a little higher than it normally sits to get the top pin to line up, but once it's in everything will settle properly. I purchased the Stabilus Heavy Duty shocks from Pelican for $14 each. They are great. I found that one of these supports the hood by itself, so it makes installation of the second one very easy. Use a board or something to support the hood while you're installing the first one.

It is an easy job for the passenger's side. The driver's is a bit of a challenge since there is no room to get your hand in there on the bottom.

If by chance there is a clip it is easy to slide it off. It is a royal pain to get it back on. I would bet the vast majority of folks never put the clip back on for the bottom pin. It is not a problem to NOT use the clip. The pin stays in place without it.

Like John said above, just lift the hood a tiny bit more than normal and the pin goes right in no problem.

Thanks guys. I need to pick up a hemostat/forceps then will tackle the project.

I think mine will be one of those without the clip on the bottom pin on the driver's side.

You don't need the bottom clip on the driver side. Trust me.

I tied dental floss on the bottom clip on the drivers side to fish it out the 15 or so times it fell before clipping in properly. Tip learned on a previous pelican thread.

A driver's side clip not installed is a job half done.

Ha -

I haven't had a d/s clip for 4 or 5 years! And I don't plan on installing one.
