Need Help wire harness/ fuse box gurus....where does this wire go?

I am replacing the dash wiring harness in an 8/84' Turbo look (M491 code) car for a friend.

I am re-hooking up the the harness to the fuse panel per the factory diagram and I have this 1 wire I cannot figure out.

Note: this car is mostly wired like an 85' but i have found a few things that were 84'. It also has a couple of Turbo elements......fun stuff

Per the factory diagrams this is a 0.75, 1.0, or 1.5 mm sq solid red wire. I don't believe its a 2.5.

The wire 'may' have been replaced when the harness was rebuilt and might have been a 0.5 size wire (the builder goes up a size when he replaces)

See below pics, it appears to go into harness 2/60 (although I have found the harness designations to be pretty useless as the wires go in and out of different harnesses).

According to the 85 diagram it has to be one of the following:

- Fuse Box 1/Fuse 2 (inlet) Fog or Horn relay - but I have both of those traced 99%

- Fuse Box 1/Fuse 2 (outlet) central Locking - if this car had central locking its been removed

- Fuse Box 1 /Fuse 3 (outlet) Fuel Pump - have this traced

- Fuse Box 3/Fuse fuse 2 Addl. fan relay - I thought this was the relay for the engine compartment heater/blower fan but I can not get continuity??? Maybe it goes through a switch and so it wont show continuity? Maybe its the footwell blowers??? I dont think I have checked continuity here..

According to the 84' diagram

It could also be for the pass window switch on drivers side - I think I checked this by checking continuity through all the window relay wires??

or,

the turbo only has a red wire this size for windshield defog. no idea how to check that.

Any body have any strategies for tracking this down? Are there any assumptions I can make with solid red wires that would narrow it down ?

Anybody have time to dig in and help me investigate? TIA

-

Hey Mike

is there a description any where of which wires are grouped together in a harness (loom) (2/60)? There is 20 or so wires in this loom, its the dash harness so most (not all) of the gauges, lights, switches are in there. I can get a break down of every wire color and what they go to but I am not sure it will help?

When you say loom do you mean the little rope looking things that seem to tie bundles of wires together that come out of the harness?

Just looking for other wire colors with that one into the rope like bundle, but if you say it is a main bundle into the bulkhead to the gauges, then I guess that is enough. I would cap and stow and sort everything else out. Then I would see what functions do not work...

Bump

Any body have any strategies for tracking this down I dont want to open the harness all the way up as its new, maybe I need to stick an pin in red wires around the harness and see if I can get continuity?

Perhaps just leave it off and see what isn't working when you turn the ignition on is a possibility?
Based on the factory prints ere are the likely suspects:
Fog lamp relay, Horn Relay, Power windows, Sun Roof, Fuel pump relay and possibly the AC relay.
Give me a call if you want to and we can troubleshoot it.

Yeah thats what I am going to do.

I just put the battery in and hooked it up!!! wooohoo no smoke or heat. Turned the key tried a bunch of lights and fans - nothing got hot and everything worked. Now I have to reassemble a few more parts and see if it starts.

I am nervous about the OEM alarm, pretty sure it did not work prior to the fire. I have it all wired up now per factory and I am afraid it will prevent it from starting. I wonder how I can disable for testing purposes.

If the fuel pump relay harness is the same as the '82, there is a brown/red wire from a T2 connector with a Yellow wire, that heads over to the alarm circuit. the alarm system grounds the wire so the fuel pump relay wont run. You could try to disconnect that wire.

Perfect

Yeah hooked the wires back together behind the ignition switch that were seperated for the after market alarm. She turned over strong and nothing heated up. I was hoping it would cough but the the gas tank has been out for some time so maybe no fuel.

I know I have been shocked some folks have actually recognized wires. "oh yeah there is only one 1.5 mm2 red w/ wht stripe in harness 2-60, it goes to the Turn signal conflagulator and you can check continuity in the glove compartment on the plug on the left side" :-) its amazing how much knowledge about these cars some folks have. I see these complete strip restorations and hot rod builds where the harness is out of the car. Then at the end its back in, so they know where every wire goes. Amazing.
