Rear light off - stop light on

Hello my Porsche friends,

I have a simple question for you. On my 1974 911 2700 "G" the rear lights are a bit naughty. When the engine is running, and I push the brake pedal the brake lights are on (as it should be). When engine is running if I turn on the headlamps, the rear right light is off and the left one is one; if I push the brake pedal both the lights are on. There's just one bulb for light/brake. Suggestions?

Cheers from Italy.

Luca

Ciao Luca!

First check the fuse panel to insure the wires are seated properly in their designated slots.

Second is to remove the rear light assembly and take a look under the rear cover plate. A wire or two may be loose and shorting out your system. Carefully inspect the plastic type board behind the sockets. They are liken to a computer's PCB board and are very brittle.

Check the bulb. It sounds bad, as in one filament has burned out.

Careful with those tabs holding the PCBs in, they break easy.

I use a trouble light with the bulb removed to first determine whether both contacts are getting 12V.

Hello my friends,

just to close the topic...I have checked the bulb before writing the post, but it's worth to remind. Later I noticed that also the front light was off. Then I surfed the web searching for the electrical diagram - I found it together with the user manual. I realized that there is a separate circuit (and consequently a separate fuse) for the parking light left and right and not for front and rear. Then I replaced the fuse and everything is working now.
The torpedo fuse actually was ok but that type of fuses tend to oxidize - for such cheap money better to change all of them avery 2-3 years.
Thanks a lot for your help,

Luca

Even better is the 911-FPR fuse panel replacement! But not as cheap as changing fuses all the time

Glad you found the problem. I find it's always best to check fuses first, then relays, before testing anything else.
