Wither the cheap motor oil?

Hi Pelicans - Oil is trading between $31-32 per barrel. If I look, I can find gas at <$1.90/gallon here in DC for regular, and maybe $2.20 for premium. So, where's my preferred Valvoline VR1 for any less than what I was paying a year ago? Any insight? Where do you go to stock up, and when?

Thanks, Pelicans!

The crude input cost to produce motor has probably gone down 50 cents a quart....not significant to the retail price. Over the long haul prices will likely drift downward. Cheers

VR1 occasionally goes on sale in April, though they skipped last year. O'reilly's and Autozone. Keep an eye open on the ads or threads about it. I'm waiting as well.

Is the price of a good bottle of wine based on the cost of the grapes?

Could be that there is no real consumer pressure to lower the price of motor oil? Most everyone who drives is well aware of the plunge in crude prices and the price of gasoline at the pump and will often search for the cheapest gas. The average car owner (unless they are "enthusiasts" and change their own oil) hasn't a clue how much a quart of oil costs and could probably care less as they only have their oil changed one or twice a year.

How many enthusiasts when faced with decision, will actually pick the more expensive oil because it feels better to?

Funny tho, when oil jumped some years ago the price of motor oil jumped right with it...basically doubled in price. The retailers reason was 'the price of oil'.
So when oil drops dramatically we'll see no change because?

It seems to have gone up since the barrel went down. Not to long ago you could find the 5 guart plus filter deals for 17 or 18.00, great deal for a beater those deals are 23.00 week in week out now.

Chevron Delo 400 LE 15w40 is $36 for 3 gallons at Costco. Good oil for our engines.

Futures traders at the mercantile exchange usually take a month or more to catch up. The refined oil you're buying now was done a while back the price will come down slowly. I do wonder when shipping companies will drop the fuel charge though!

I look at it this way...I am a service plumber and the price of fuel has certainly helped my bottom line but I'm not going to lower my service charge because the price of fuel has gone down...doesn't make much business sense

Just like the airlines adding extra baggage fees etc when fuel prices were high.

You are not an item on the commodity market that can be bought on futures.
