No Parking Lights Left SIde

Hi everyone. I tried searching but I couldn't find anything. I have a 1980 911SC. It's a Euro model but I am not sure if that makes a difference. When I have the lights on the front and rear parking lights do not come on. The right side does. Also when I pull the headlight switch out to the first position the headlights come on. There is no parking lights only option. Is the switch possible causing all of this? Should I try to take it out and clean all the connections?

It may be a combination of two things:

1. Driver side markers out, check the fuse or the wiring into the fuse holder are snug. Even if fuse looks intact, remove and clean the holder then replace fuse.

2. Position one could be wired wrong. Headlight should light on position 2 or last pull of the knob only. If wired correctly then it could be the stalk fault.

Thanks for the tips and the diagram. That's a huge help. They of course have suddenly started working again. I went to take a look and now they are just working and have for the last two days. Go figure. I will still take a look at the fuse and then the switch.

Don't you just hate that

If temps warmed up a bit it could expand the metal part of the fuse or contacts on the light assembly

You might also want to check at the bulb and holder. I had the same problem, bumps and rough roads caused the bulb holder to loosen. I tightened everything up and have not had a problem since (about a year now).
Good luck,

I had the exact same problem yesterday on my 1980 SC (US). Checked fuses and everything looked ok. Broke out the Bentley and kept coming back to the fuse. Removed #4 and even though it looked good when I pulled it - it fell apart in my hand. Not sure if the colder weather was a factor but that seems to be my issue with left side marker and left tail lights out.

*Just confirmed #4 fuse was my issue. Blaming it on the change in temperature.

In my experience, there are only five possible causes for marker light failure:

1) blown fuses or bulbs;
2) corroded sockets or connector springs;
3) corroded or missing ground connections;
4) disconnected wiring harness fittings under the dash; or
5) bad/loose turn-signal relay.

I'm betting that corrosion caused by water spray over the years is the culprit. Remove the bulbs and thoroughly clean the sockets and connector springs as well as the ground connections. This should solve your problem.

Thanks! I just ordered a new batch of fuses. I actually don't have any spares and the local store didn't have any in stock.

Excellent tips.

The lights are still working so clearly there is something loose. So these are all good ideas of things to go through.

Then it's on to figuring out my mirrors not working and my sunroof. I am pretty sure the sunroof is the switch.

I had the same issue on a 72...Parking light on the drivers side front didn't work, however the blinker did. The issue was the ground in the front trunk just ahead front of the battery. 5 wires on a ground post with a nut to hold them in place. Cleaned each wire and the post...used a little dielectric grease and it now works fine.

Sometimes it the simple stuff that gets it done.

Was blowing fuses on my driver parking light after working on the fuse panel. Lost my headlights while driving last night (!) due to this light or something related to it, not sure. I pulled the light housing and wiring and found that the ground wire was loose/disconnected, and was likely shorting to some other wire or part of the housing. Cleaned everything with Deoxit, crimped down the spade connectors on ground wire for tighter fit, and put it all back together. Light works - no fuse issue - hopefully just a good once-over was all it needed.

When I bought my '87 the parking lights did not work at all. I removed the lenses and saw that all the copper bits were pretty corroded. A wire wheel on my dremel and a few minutes was all I needed to clean them up. Parking lights have worked great ever since.
