I'm thinking if I could work out how to do the parking pad on just the slope of the ground or with minimal backfill, it could be done for a lot less. We're only talking 2 or 3 yards of concrete here, right? I think I need to get some quotes and sharpen the pencil on that a bit more.

Truck stays outside -- it already is. 911 on lift. Wife and daughter's cars inside. Everyone is mostly happy except the lift takes up so much dang room.

Truck is outside of the SC bay spot. Honda is outside of wife's SUV spot. You want to sell the SC because you don't want to move cars around. As is, with 4 cars, the SC stays garaged, and the truck is never blocked. When wife wants to leave the garage, and Honda is behind it. So, if you sell the SC, daughter's Honda goes in that SC bay. Now, wife is free to come and go with nothing ever blocking her in. But, truck will be blocking the Honda. Truck will always block one car. If truck comes home first, it is blocking the empty bay. Conclusion: Selling the SC does not solve your actual problem. Neither does getting a lift.

Errr, no. I'm trying to figure out how to have harmony in the universe for 5-7 more years until I can buy a house that better supports my Porsche lifestyle. Give me a bunch of garage space and a toilet and I'm good. Wife can pick out everything else.

Sorta... except your analysis left me Porsche-less, which is like dividing by zero. Does. Not. Compute.

But lift + parking pad does solve the problem.

Wife parks in her spot and can come and go as she pleases.

I park truck outside on new parking pad. I come and go as I please.

Daughter parks under 911 on lift. She can come and go as she pleases.

911 goes on lift. Not driven every day. I move daughter's car when necessary.

Let's say I could figure out how to do the parking pad on a budget. Maybe do some kind of crushed material. Let's say $3k. I could stomach that. Might even make the house a little more attractive to a potential buyer one day -- who knows. A lift is useful. It can be moved or sold. Either way not a complete loss of investment.

I also need to feel good that no one (a) drives a car into one of the posts of the lift -- and that one is on me to teach and (b) the lift itself or the controls can be locked to prevent human error.

I would have limited tool and work space but I could (grudgingly) live with that.

Tim, I know a fellow who can build that additional space if you decide to go that route. He did a nice job building another friend of mine a 20x20 building for his machine shop. I am just throwing that out there. I can ask him how much it cost if you like.

Build a slightly bigger parking pad to hold 2 cars. Truck and daughter park on pad, porsche and wife's car in the garage and everybody can come and go as they please.

Why does the daughters car need to be in the garage? I think you're fine with just the pad next to the garage for your truck. SC and wifes car in garage and daughters car in the spot behind the SC. Switch the parking spots of your wifes car and the SC so your daughters car doesn't block you in.. If it's a must that the civic is in the garage then put the 4 post in and then you have something to work on your cars and you can take it to your next house! If you're leaving this spot in 5-7 years I'd probably skip a major overhaul and stick to necessities!

But what do I know I'm single with no kids and both my cars are in the garage

Mentally, Ronnie has got a big swinging you-know what right now from fixing his 930 air leaks.

In a couple months it will subside or when the first WRX blows his doors off. Just roll with it.

Perhaps an option is to not do a thing and shuffle cars or park them a touch back so cars can egress from the garage with a little weave action.

That would require an extra twenty to thirty foot walk for those inconvenienced.

I think the parking pad is going to need a retaining wall around it, which could eventually become the foundation for your new garage extension/shop. So make it extra wide.

In a few years, you will not need a new house or a monster garage, as your daughter will be moving out, and taking her car. You will than have a two car garage, and an extra wide and tall extension garage, and your biggest problem will be deciding which space your lift will need to go in. BUT... you will then have enough space for wife's car AND four Porsches, if you are indeed so foolish as to purchase two lifts and fill them up. Truck still needs to live outside, but in fact could indeed live in the extension, because it will have an 8 foot door.

That would be space for a truck, two Porsches in the old garage, and your wife's car. plus you can park the truck outside and have a killer empty workshop while both of your P cars are safely ensconced.

First step is the properly engineered parking pad and retaining wall. But you could draw the whole thing up now. You don't need the extra shop space out back. You need an extra wide bay, as long as your garage.

Easy peasy.

You know the garage door is already set up for a lift, correct?. Go get the biggest 4 post you can make fit, raise the lights and buy more shelves. FWIW, I park an E class Mercedes under my 4-post with no real issues. It will likely be under $3k to get a nice lift installed.
