Sports Muffler Choice help please

I own a 69E, which recently received a 3.2 short-stroke twin-plug engine replacement (original engine and trans are now safely on a pallet!). The original 2.0 engine had a Dansk sports muffler on it. However, the mechanic who installed the new engine said the muffler was probably choking the engine a little and i should buy a larger one at some point.

So, my question I am hoping someone can help with is this. Will the M&K R-style dual muffler be a good choice for my application or are there other systems that are better suited to my engine setup?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks
Nathan

Scart

I recommend Martin Scart and his SCART Super Sound 2-into-1 muffler. Original design was for 2.2-2.4 engines but he can make you a custom piece for your engine. He is currently making one for my 3.8 '71 narrowbody. It is a banana-shaped muffler so it looks stock, if that's what you're after.
Cheers

I'd suggest you look at a Monty M52. I would pick it over a Dansk or M&K, easily. They are made to order in Australia and shouldn't take too long to get. Here's an ad I posted recently for one that I sold. In it, there are links to Monty's web site:

FS: Monty muffler, 2-in, 2 out

Or, you can email Laurie at info@montymufflers.com

For what it is worth, I have heard from several reputable tuners on here, who dyno and tune many cars, that the Dansk 2-1 sport muffler is about the best power maker you can find.....gives up only a few HP to straight pipes, and has no drone. They have each told me that is what they would put on their own cars, that were 3.2 liter cars like my 89 is. I am about to redo the back half of the exhaust on one of my cars, and will be going that route as a result.

Thanks for all the feedback. A little more info:

1. The current exhaust is the dual pipe Dansk and I am looking for a dual pipe in the R style (where pipes come out under bumper guards).

2. The current exhaust was on the 2.0 and I believe the actual pipes are smaller than they should be to exploit the larger engine. Is there any truth to this or do I have it wrong?

3. Scart looks good, but at $2k is a little expensive for me. The M&K r-style from our host appears to be about $800. So, was thinking I could buy that and then sell the Dansk one I have to offset some of the cost.

Thoughts?

As always, appreciate everyone's input and help.

Nathan,

If it was me, I would use the Twin-pipe Sport muffler if thats what you like.

Its louder and raspier than the Dansk Sport muffler, however it works equally well. Its NOT a restriction until you get to 3.5 litres or more in displacement.

Dansk makes a replica of that original factory rally muffler you want.

There are a few choices in the R configuration. Ours is 321 stainless and weighs about 14 pounds. Has plenty of capacity for your 3.2L engine. We can baffle to fit your sound preference, some like it loud some do not.

Will the R style M&K muffler bolt right up to my existing config, while keeping the SSI's?

Also, what is the diameter of the tail pipes on the R muffler? My current Dansk pipes are 2" OD and they just look so damn puny to me!

Yes it will bolt right up. Tailpipes are 2.5"OD.

Hello
Here's a link of a video on how a 3.2 or bigger engine would sound with an Scart Super Sound. It Has only one exhaust pipe but it is not restrictive at all.

I have to say that Scart muffler loses quite a bit of the characteristic 911 sound. Close you eyes and you'd never know it was a 911.

I think it comes down to what kind of Porsche sound you like best. Martin Scart specifically designs his muflers to sound like early road rally 2.0 911s. Very throaty at idle and working up ti a high pitched whail at high revs. The only other mufler that sounds similar is any Dansk sport, but I still liked the Scart over them because it has no drone at all at crusing speed (below 3500rpm)
Here is another clip on a 2.4 that ilustrates this better.

That last one sounded more like a 911, much better than the first clip. NA racing 911s generally had two pipes, so you miss a little of the sound of those engines with only one outlet. These mufflers have a slightly harsh note, at least in the videos.

I agree, it sounds good but it doesn't define early 911. I have the M&K r-style dual out and with a stock 3.2L with headers, it sounds good to my ears.

I think I have one of the best sounding 911's there is (turbo 3.2 that sounds like a 1000cc sport bike under boost and deep idle tone), but heard an SC with M&K running lumpy cams, and wow, that thing sounded great!

This video gives an idea of the character of a classic style twin outlet sport muffler. It's louder than most, becase the outlets are in line with the inlets, but you can get the idea of how two outlets pointing rearward influence the sound, as opposed to other designs:

Here's a short video of an early RSR. Apart from the commentary, you can hear stretches of video that will give you an idea of what a 911 should sound like, in my opinion.

Hello Nathan
Just so you know, my SCART Super Sound is $1,490.00 dollars, shipping included. And he also makes a center dual out called the RS.
