Could the cold be to blame?

Haven't driven my car since Nov. 27 because it's been cold and snowy here in DC. Temps have been as low as single digits. The car never leaked oil before. Yesterday I noticed a small streak of engine oil on the garage floor. Maybe a tablespoon worth of oil.

I got on my knees to see where it's coming from and it seems to be from the very center of the bottom of the engine.

Could this be because of the cold and not driving it? Should I be worried?

It could indeed be due to the cold extremes ... shrinkage, etc. Oil return tube seals come to mind as a possibility, though I doubt that you will have a long-term leak problem once the car is driven again and the engine is heat-cycled a few times.

You have MAJOR ENGINE DAMAGE and should sell you car to me. to avoide such high repair costs.

My 87 does the same thing while it sits in an unheated, detached garage. Tight as a drum all spring, summer and fall, then a small leak coming from the oil return tubes, winding down to the center of the engine case, and dropping to the floor.

Freaked me out when I first bought the car, now I don't worry as it stops as soon as the air warms up. Every spring I power wash the underside area at a do-it-yourself car wash. No leaks during the other 3 seasons.

I worried so much that I actually ordered the newer, two-piece oil return tubes from Pparts one spring (car's are original one-piece). Returned them once the leak stopped - thanks Wayne! You should be OK.
