Those Evil Uro Red Relays
I woke the Porsche up yesterday, and after hours of brake-work my wife was eager to take a drive. We loaded up and hit the road.
About 45 minutes into the drive, the engine cut out and we coasted to a stop. My wife was, understandably, quite unhappy. Fortunately I know the quick things to check, and I swapped one of my black relays for the red fuel pump relay. Fixed! In order to avoid slowly destroying the black relay, I dug into my smuggler's box and pulled out my backup red relay. It didn't work. So now I have two red Uro fuel pump relays which don't work reliably, and I have no fog lights because I stole their relay. This isn't the first time the red relay has died on us. My wife has decreed that I shall get a reliable relay "at any cost" - something about not wanting to call AAA this year. Which relay should I get?

I understand URO quality hasn't been the best yet even Porsche cuts some corners - several years ago I picked up a new red relay from the dealer and it was made in China.

URO products suck, that is all.
I had a spare URO demo relay. When I realized what it was I gave it the float test. Didn't even bother with it.

Porsche parts.
When I replaced the brake pads on our "86, some of the replacement
pads were made in Mexico, and others in china. Just a thought............... Best, Gerry

Unfortunately, the black ones dont have a bias diode, so they don't protect the car's electrical system properly from voltage spikes that can occur from the fuel pump spinning after power is removed. So I do need a red one.
But it seems people are only aware of bad relays - not good ones.

Quote:
"Bias diode.."..? Voltage Damping diode.... There are solid state devices/circuits connected to the armature coil of the fuel pump relay. Unless somehow "damped", short circuited, the inductive voltage spike that results when de-powering the relay will often damage those 1980's era devices. One should NEVER use anything but a "red" relay for the fuel pump. |
