turn signal problems
having turn signal problems with my '85 911. They simply don't work. If I hit the turn signal (either direction) when head lights OFF, nothing happens, other than the green arrow on the dash lighting up solid. If the headlights are ON, green arrow lights up solid and front and rear turn signal lights get brighter, but solid, not flashing. Hazard lights do not flash either. relay has been replaced. Next step to replace the switch? or is there something i should be looking at on the switch?

Correction.....if the headlights are off, green arrows on dash are NOT lit up when I hit turn signal. green lights on dash only go on when I hit the turn signal if headlights are ON.

Some starting points for you.
1. Get the PET and understand the wiring for your car. 2. Is the hazzard and turn on the same fuse? My car has separate circuits for this. I believe there is a separate turn relay as well. I just replaced the turn relay on mine it's behind the gauges and can be accessed via the frunk. It fixed a lot of my turn signal issues when I replaced mine. 3. Get a volt meter and start checking the circuit starting at the fuse block. Your manual shows the fuse layout and sometimes it's on the cover if it's the right cover. 4. The turn switch can get worn out, you can take the clam off and clean it up and bend the contact points so that they work better, this worked on mine. Good luck! |

Thanks 75. there is one fuse for the hazards, a fuse for left turn and a fuse for right turn. As far as I can tell, there is one relay for both located in the trunk behind the fuel gauge (and that relay has been replaced).
I double checked the fuses. there was some corrosion on the hazard fuse. replaced it and now the hazards actually FLASH, when the key is in the on position. nothing when it is off. no change with the turn signals. only gets brighter (no flash) if the headlights are on. headlights off and nothing. I am going to take a look at the switch, but since the lights do get brighter when i engage the switch (if the headlights are on) it seems unlikely that's it. I found an old headlight and hazard switch in the trunk. i'm thinking the previous owner messed up the wiring when those were replaced? |

Below is a post that I previously submitted to the board with my own flasher issues with my 80SC. The post has a schematic of the 85 hazard/turn signal circuit. Your issue is now with just the flasher circuit. The power fuses 8 provide the power for the flasher relay when in the directional mode. Fuse 2 provides power to the flasher relay when it the hazard 4 way flasher mode.

You haven't installed LED turn signal bulbs have you? That's exactly how mine behaved after installing them before I installed an LED flasher relay
