Cool Dream Come True New Targa Owner

Hi Everyone,
I just registeres to pelican forums since I usually was in rennlist on the 951 forum. I finally had a chance in life to buy a 911!! Theres always something like house stuff, a vacation, another car, two kids but I finally bit the bullet.

For background purposes, my brother in law is wachuko (never documents anything LOL) and for the past 10 years I've been fiddling around with an 87 951 given to me by Jaime.

So anyways, I found an 81 Silver Targa and I'm totally in love with this freaking car...to be honest Targas were not on my top list but after seeing it's capability like the Singer version or the RWBs (Rauh Welt)....WOW.

The car is in great state, it's even a celebrity since the PO is a video producer and does videos for Daddy Yanlee and the stuff. Here's the link to the video....>https://youtu.be/z3RJd6HZkpk
(pay attention or youll miss it hahaha)

The car has 9 and 7 Fuchs (have to confirm the rear) which makes it look soooo nice. I also changed the steering wheel to a Momo prototype donated by Jaime

The targa top is a hard fiberglass top. I will post further on some questions about this since if you look at the picture you can see the edge of the windshield, the top kinda sticks out and does not take the curve nicely with the windshield. This makes it grab some unwanted air noise!!

That top is not the right one for your car if you want I'll take it off your hands.

Yesterday I removed the top since it lifted in the center after going around 70 mph. Thought the whole thing had blown off!

I noticed this top is held to the stock targa frame with self tapping screws along the side frame sections. This is easy to improve....but I was looking for recommendations on the center section and the edges.

The center section got unglued from some angular pieces that hold the top to the front and rear of the top. It was poorly glued. I am thinking of two options...
1) reglue with some additional fiberglass or a super freaking epoxy extending about an inch all around the angular.
2)if an adhesive wont work...i would drill through the top so theres no way it lifts, BUT ONLY if Irecover the hard top with vynil simulating its stock look. If anyone has pictures of a hard top covered in vynil please share...

Also, you can see the edge of the top vs the windshield edge, the top is sort of flattened out and do not curve nicely downwards.

Edgardo,

Very happy for you. Enjoy it for many, many years, in good health.

Happy to be able to contribute with the steering wheel.

Now...about that center horn button... lol...

Welcome Aboard Targa with Saratoga Top, NICE

As far as the tab, weld it back on, on low sets, spot/stitch welds to keep the heat down.

Actually it is fiberglass...so have to get a good epoxy.

That broken tab is fiber glass?

I had a 87 944S, wow brings back good memories, circa Miami Vice, Phil Collins blasting down the freeway

Dr Dynamics. Welcome.

A widely known fact is that Ferry, on his death bed, last words, were, "The 81 Targa is the God Damn Boss"

I don't make this stuff up, I just pass it along.

The tab is metal... what it attaches to in the top is fiberglass...

Covering the hard Targa Top

The problem with covering the hard top is that the drip rails are built in. You cant use the stock vinyl unless you remove the drip rails. You could use a piece of vinyl that just over laps the front and rear but it is likely that the exposure will result it pulling away on the edges that aren't secured between the frame and the glass.

As mentioned above, your windshield seal shows a large gap between the frame and the seal, this means that your windshield is riding to low in the frame and water seeps into that gap and drips down into the lower part of the frame and creates car cancer.

To fix the windshield seal you have to carefully massage the seal into the proper position, you can do it with a plastic wedge and rubber mallet, be gentle.

A little update... haven't had the time to write...work/kids/soccer/pediatricians/traffic/birthdays...you get it

Finally my garage looks cool!

Bought the jackpad...Awesome tool !!! I was crazy to confirm the wheel size. One of the things I love most about the stance is that I confirmed the wheels are 7x16's upfront and 9 x 16's in the rear. They make the car look so good without the damage of making it widebody!

Received a couple parts that I have yet to install but have doubts on some stuff I want to buy...searching for your direction...

1) I want to do the LED upgrade for the gauges...I emailed Etarga but no answer...
2) Who sells the gauge faces and glass?
3)Anyone have an incomplete or broken targa top or parts. I'm doing hoework to see if it's feasable to restore mine to vynil.

4) Does anyone identify this exhaust muffler?? I thought it was locally installed but the connections and flanges look too good to be local shop quality. The sound is pretty deep. I love to start it up and hear the cycles rumbling. Beets the sneezing of the 951's BOV.
