lighter weight stock bumpers
I like the idea of fiberglass bumpers, yet also like my 1974-era bumpers. I've been wondering if there's a way to lighten up the front and rear bumpers internally while retaining the stock bumpers.
I read in a past thread the bumpers themselves are made of aluminum, so they're already fairly light. Aside from removal of the bumper pads (rear bumper), it seems the other "heaviness" of the bumpers are the shocks (?) that connect to the frame. With that said, can those shocks be removed and the bumpers put back into place? Also, is there any other part of the assembly that can be altered/removed to lighten the bumpers while still maintaining a stock appearance? Thanks in advance.

Well, a couple of things. I have seen photos of the rear bumper with relatively large 2-3" holes drilled in the vertical face.
As far as the shocks you would have to replace them with something else since I believe that is the main thing that holds the bumper to the car. I believe I have read somewhere that Euro models didn't use a shock, just a bracket. So you could probably fabricate some kind of bracket to replace the shocks. If you wanted to get extreme you could also pull off the rubber trim . If you are handy you could probably fabricate some of the parts from f/g. Unfortunately as with many things with our cars as heavy as they may be the best weight savings come from removing things entirely. Most things on our cars aren't unnecessarily heavy.

Steve is correct. The Euro cars had a collaspe-able bracket that had to be replaced when it got hit.
There's a lot of things to lighten before you start fabricating aluminum brackets to hold your bumpers onto the car. Stripped out interior, C/F body panels, ect. I'm sure you've read all of the threads on weight loss.
