Custom 911 Illustration

I cleaned my car up for the Luftgekühlt show and took the plunge on getting an illustration made from a set of pictures I took the next day. I'm due for a re-paint, but there's no easier way to clean things up than through art.

I had seen auto-illustrated.com in a post on the Early 911S registry. It's an artist named Glen who's out in Minnesota. For less than the cost of a tank of gas, he'll make a really nice illustration of your car.

I used to think the deal with these was that they'd take a 3D model of a generic 911 and wrap a skin over it with the colors from a particular car. But looking at the details, I now see that there's a huge amount of detailed work involved in it.

Look at how the highlights on the oil filler door have to switch from one side of the sheet metal to the other.

Or check out the lug studs in the shadows. Everything in the illustration is vector based, which means it doesn't lose its sharpness when you enlarge it or get it printed out to put up on the wall.

Here's my finished illustration. I'm probably going to get some more done.

And here are a couple others I saw on Glen's site:

You can see more at his site and also contact him through www.auto-illustrated.com. He's a very nice and laid back guy.

$50. I suspect he's going to get more expensive, as time passes and he does more of these.

But for now it's fifty bucks. No 'Porsche tax.'

T-shirts with these images on the back would be sweet, maybe the crest on the front!

I'm trying to figure out the best way to output it to frame and hang on a wall.

I suspect the cheapest way might be one of those "print on canvas" sites. They often have discounts and it would be nice over time.
The other option is someone with an inkjet plotter. The are used by a lot of sign companies and they are pretty familiar with using the better inks that stand up to UV. I suspect they still charge by the square foot. If you know someone with an architectural or engineering company they may have a plotter or maybe one of the vinyl sign guys will switch their plotter over to ink as a favor.

So it's a year later, and I'm pretty sure that the Auto-Illustrated guy stopped making the renderings. At least, that's what his website says. I suspect that charging so little makes this more trouble than it's worth.

But I found another guy who just did a profile version of my car.

I wouldn't be surprised if he gets swamped as well, since he's charging a similarly-low price right now ($80). So if you're interested, contact him sooner rather than later. His name is Elie Man and you can email him directly at: @ModificaClassica on instagram or by email at modificaclassica@gmail.com.

Here's the same thing with the (OG) hood crest:

[Edit: updated contact info and (well, it had to happen) Elie Man's price for the illustrations.]

Had a young man do this for me at Cars n Coffee in Irvine when it was at the Mazda building for $25. He went up to $50 a short time later and is still busy. Did this one while we were there attending and he usually did three a morning. Not quite the same but I like it he did it all by hand while on site - pretty impressive.

Very nice, Jack. If mine weren't still a work in progress I'd have one done, too.

I know how to do that. I don't have the software anymore but I could probably get it again if enough people wanted it. I stumbled on how to do this back in '98 while working on a custom catalogue project for an import company.
