Porsche Crest Just picked up a '75 911 Carrera Targa

Hi All,

I'm new to the site and Porsche in general. I just picked up a '75 911 Carrera Targa and was hoping to get some advice on what is needed to get it running. Here's the story:
  • VIN and Engine numbers tell me it is a '75 Carrera Targa (California Car)
  • Previous owner says everything is stock, except drivers seat, radio, and the car once had an alarm but it was removed because it was shorting out something else
  • 28,800 miles
  • Owner said it has been sitting in his garage for 8 yrs, but I'm thinking it's been closer to 16 years, as the tags on the car show '99
I have not had a chance to really get under the car and check things out, or even try to turn the engine over by hand. So far, all I have done is check numbers and send off for a COA.

Any advice on what to check/replace prior to getting a battery and even attempting to start it up would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

faapgar, the driver's seat is a Recaro. I mentioned in the original post that it was not stock. I will post more pics when I can. I was just looking for general advice on things to check/replace. I figure that I'll have to remove the gas tank, clean it, purge the fuel lines, clean the injectors, replace the oil, and probably have to replace any belts/tubes because of dry rot. Outside of that, not sure where to go with it.

Regards

SLB,
If you don't get any useful replies, do a search for restarting a 911. There are lots of existing threads already here that will be useful for you.

Restarting a 3 year laid up engine
Restarting engine after sitting for 5 yrs
Restart of 911 after 6 years

Welcome! And awesome color! I have a 75 911s California car. You can peruse my thread where I got mine running after a nearly identical situation (I think the tags said 99 on mine too)

In short, I replaced the fuel pump, acumilator, and put in a new battery and I was driving it the same day I got it. Of course since then I've done a million projects on it and I've loved every minute.

Nice find!

Just out of curiosity - Do you have a folding top or did the car come with the hardshell top?

Definitely do a bunch of searching/reading before doing anything. You can accelerate numerous problems by not being careful.

Some additional pics of the underside of the engine would be helpful to understand just how original this is (hopefully somebody pulled the thermal reactors...).

Where are you located? Chances are there's a Pelican near you willing to help.

It is a folding top. I will get pics posted of the underside of the engine as soon as I can. I am located in SoCal. Thanks for the post!

28k seems too good to be true, right? Odometer reads 28,864. It doesn't have enough digits to show 128,864 miles. I trust the guy I bought it from, and he says it only has 28k. Is there a way to tell if it is really 128k?

Thanks!

Did it come with service records? Mine has dealer stamps in the manual for oil change intervals. There's a stamp at 60k and 90k miles and my car's odometer has 58k on it.

When was the 11 blade fan installed? Your car should have come with a 5 blade fan.

The book I have is blank for the service records. 11 blade fan was put in before 1990. The guy I got it from was the second owner. He got it prior to 1990 and knew the first owner pretty well. The second owner did not have anything done to the car.

I could believe 28K miles. The OE air pump is still there.

Welcome to P-town!

I do not disbelieve in anything. I start from the premise that everything is true until proved false. Everything is possible.

Sometimes its hard to tell if it is 28K or 128K Miles. I would look for signs of wear on items that are used a lot when driving the car and getting in and out of a car. I once looked at a '72 Corvette and the owner told me it only had low miles. However, the seats showed a lot of wear and the rubber covers on the pedals (specially the clutch and brake pedals) were pretty much worn. A sign of much higher mileage. Then I opened the hood to check the engine number and found a Buick engine in the car. That was the end of that purchase.

Steve... 128 or 28k miles, doesn't matter if you got it for the right price. Of course 28k is better. Color looks like ice green or something like that---very nice. Will be interesting to hear how the hand turn of the engine goes. Good luck --- beautiful Targa!
