Red face weeeeeeeee..ker-klunk..weeeeeeeeeeee...

Some of you may recall that in late June I had an unfortuneate run in with a truck tire that had been left behind in the middle of the road. Not sure if this is related or not but here goes:

It takes a bit of force to put into each gear, with a resulting sound of *klunk* as the gear locks, or is fully engaged. Related or not, during acceleration there is an intermittent rattling sound coming from the same place.

It doesn't look like the tunnel is dented at all. I've had a short shift kit since the transmission rebuild about 35K ago, and due to a trans oil leak, had to replace the clutch and t/o bearing about 500 miles ago. This was happening before that and I hoped it was all related, but alas.....it is not.

Also, do any of you experience trans noise while in neutral? When I push the clutch pedal down, noise goes away. I was told by a P-Man that it is normal, but I don't believe him.

I hear some rattling (heavily damped by trans fluid and carpeting) and gurgling... which ceases when I press in the clutch.

If your noises aren't pronounced, I'd consider them normal for a 915 (I'm assuming your car is pre-87).

I also have a noise from the gearbox in neutral. When I push the clutch down the noise disappears. I have talked to a number of 911 owners who have the same problem.

I was told by my mechanic that it could be worn gearbox bearings causing the noise. A german owner who has the same problem asked the workshop manager at an official Porsche dealer in Germany. The workshop manager said that it was nothing to worry about...?
