Building a better Black Beauty #3: Reinforcing the Chassis
These pictures aren't comprehensive, and some of the work was only partially done when I took them. But they show the new tub for my car getting the following:
Deleting both battery boxes for oil cooler air flow. Sealing up holes from old dealer-installed AC. New version of car will still have the 37-degree AC engineered by TRE. Reinforcements for front, through-the-body swaybars. Welded in mounts for full cage. Power-assist brake setup from post-77 models. Welded-in reinforcements for real coil-overs as well as reinforcement of rear crossmember. Here are pictures, in no particular order. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Looks like good work Jack. How are you finishing the interior, trunk, etc? Will you completely disassemble everything after the mods are done and spray the complete car, interior and exterior?

Reinforcements for front, through-the-body swaybars.
I thought the early cars were already set up for this? Isn't yours a 1973? Or is it set up for them, but still needs reinforcement?

Jack,
On the rear engine compartment photo, the welding they did in the corners. Did they install a plate or just weld the seam? Any closeup photos. Thanks for the info. Tinker |

This new tub is a 72, and came with a factory swaybar, which goes through the body. However, the factory provided a fairly small swaybar, designed for tires that were skinny, with compounds that couldn't hold a candle to even today's average street tires.
So, to prevent the three bolts from tearing loose under the stress of modern bars and tires, you can reinforce the area where the bar mounts, and then drill out the hole to allow for a bigger front bar. The stock hole will accommodate the 22mm bar I'm currently putting in, but we drilled it wider as a preemptive measure. Tinker, I think it's just a beefier weld, but I'll take a look tomorrow.

I'm jealous! I'd love to take on a project like this, and have some ideas rolling around in my head, but I chose to restore a VW crew cab this winter. Maybe next year.
I also wanted to use a '72, because I like the external oil filler.

Now all you need is turbocharged engine....repeat after me: boost is good boost is good boost is good all that 3.6 crapola has less than old 930 engine produces stock Hmm...i wonder what difference tricked out turbo engine would do with that light weight Yeah baby yeah!

oh...you mean the parts are on the *inside*. Oh Venkman...I'm sorry. We've been going about this all wrong. This Mr. Stay-Puft is okay. He's a sailor, he's in New York. We get this guy laid, we won't have any trouble |

Looks like it's coming along. It looks like it won't be too long til you're back out on the track.

Looks good! A question: what's the "proper" way to mount harnesses with that type of rollbar? Will you add a crossbar or simply attach to the rear bulkhead and run the belts thru the seat openings?
