Retro California Plates

Is anyone here participating in the Retro California Plate program?

DMV takes orders for retro license plates - latimes.com

You bet... Thanks for sharing! The blue/gold plates are so much better-looking on a 70s car IMO.
Wondering if they will accept personalized plates in the original "123_SAM" sequence?!

My 71 was originally licensed in California with a blue plate. I have tried to get personalized plates to match that original six character plate. However I am unable to do so. I could get the numbered plate one before or after, but not the number that was original to the car.

I imagine it is because my vehicle is still operational as opposed to the other vehicles being long gone.

Does anyone know who I would need to contact if there is a method to get my original sequence reissued?

Thanks

I hope they get enough participants.

Is it messed up that I want black, not blue, plates for my black 1972? I think I'd rather have the plate match the car than be period-correct.

So, reading the press release announcing this program, it states that:

The law specifies that 7,500 applications must be reached by January 1, 2015. If 7,500 applications are not received by that date, any fees paid for the California Legacy plates will be refunded to the applicant.

Does this mean that the plates will NOT be issued until AFTER January 1st, 2015?

What's not clear to me Jack is whether the plate "type" limits the # of characters available. The yellow and the black plates only had a total of 6 characters back in the day, I believe. If the program is truly a "vintage license plate" program then I imagine that the yellow and the black plates limit you to 6 characters, although I would love to be proven wrong.

Basically the state needs 7,500 pre-orders before Jan 1, 2015 or the program is dead.

As soon as they reach that minimum threshold they'll start production and from there it will take 9-12 months to receive your plates.

I for one can't wait to get my hands on some blue plates for my 87 GP white coupe. Not period correct, but will look good nonetheless!

Ordered black-n-yellow plates for my '69!

I've not been able to find out yet how restrictive they're going to be with matching plate design (era) with year of vehicle.

Spread the word everyone - let's get this program done!!!!

The fact that they allow you to carry over an existing vanity plate on the form suggests they'll be using the same presses to make them as the current plates. I'd be surprised if they did anything to restrict the number or pattern of the characters. But then, who says I won't be surprised?

I'm confused: according to the post above the blue and yellow is from the 1970's.

My wife's 1963 Ford Falcon, of which she is the original owner, has the blue and yellow California plate. Any thoughts on that? Not sure why this happened but it not like we are upset about it either.

This is really cool, I hope they get enough orders. I wish they'd do the 80s "sun" plates too, I'd buy a set for my E30. I was super-bummed when the DMV made me order new plates because some idiot PO had ruined the originals while trying to make them non-reflective. (They'd actually sanded the blue off of the numbers and redone them with what appeared to be blue sharpie!)
