An SC should have two coolers. The rad unit at the motor and a unit in the front right wheel well...trombone/multi tube etc.

The oil lines run along the passenger side under the valance....check for the mounting points/blt holes.
How much history do you have with the car?

Manual Over-ride; rotary switch for good clearance from cruise control. (Hole is original in dash but just covered with leather.)

For those that installed the Carrera cooler, did you have to relocate the horns? Or did you go with a replacement snail style aftermarket unit. I'm looking at the Elephant Racing kit for the wheel well on my '83 SC and seems like horn re-placement is a must.

pierrot 04-14-2016 02:55 PM

I have no history at all, just bought it 2 months ago and the motor is allmost all of the time at 120 celsius

Jdub 04-14-2016 03:34 PM

120c is too hot - that is almost 250f. Would you expect your car to run hot - do you live in a hot area? If not, is the car tuned correctly? Is the cooler getting hot to the touch? Is there a kink in the hard tubing?

I updated my SC to a 28-tube brass cooler and installed matched number gauge and sender unit at that time. I noted cooler running, but not by much. Where I live the summers are fairly mild and the engine not taxed in stop and go commuting very much on hot days.

pierrot 04-14-2016 04:10 PM

il live in a high altitude city 6,000 feet, weather now is very dry and from 28 to 30 degres celsius, less oxygen and yes the trombone lines get very hot after 100 celsius, seems the car is tuned right.if not how can i know,i am not into mechanics.
thanks for your advises

Myself - DIY install of the used turbo cooler which also came with the fan. I welded up my own mounting bracket for the lower portion of the cooler. I also removed the factory horn bracket and modified it (IIRC) to turn the horns so they pointed down further. I think I shorted the bracket so that the horns were closer together as well.
I purchased the factory switch for the motorized cabriolet top and installed it on the dash and wired it up to manually override the cooler thermostat when I want.

I replaced/moved the horns. I have the small round Italian jobs on either side of the inner front valance.
I took a piece of extruded plastic and blocked off underneath in front of the Carrera cooler unit to force the air thru the radiator/like you see in all vehicles today....relocating the horns (easy) made a clean air path. I also use a scoop in place of the right running light.

In 110 degree ambient heat (Az summer) running 75 mph for an hour I'll see 200/205 degrees. At rest/stopped in traffic with the fan on in that same heat 210.

I've seen 220 when running hard (100 plus mph) on hot days only but have never seen 230 no matter what the temp or what the speed.

I went with Elephant wide-mouth kit. This has thermocouple sensor and temp adjust. I set it to about 100C. Runs noticeably cooler than with trombone, hardly ever turns fan on, even at Mile High altitude and AC.
Trumpet horns had to go, but compact red Hella Supertone horns fitted easily. I only did the electrical wiring and used 2 fuses. 5A for controller, and 25A for fan itself. The 5A is to "ignition on" line, and the 25A is from "always on" line. This way the fan is off when ignition is off. If both fuses are from "always on" line, then fan will continue, after ignition is off.

Heat (as in too much) has always been the bane of these air cooled engines. I swapped out the old trombone... put in a Carrera cooler with stone guard and fan (with both thermostat and manual switch). Florida summers are just too brutal and I now can run the AC regardless of traffic or running at speed. It was - to me - a mandatory "upgrade" that will insure that my motor will not be taxed unnecessarily.

Can you describe where you placed the thermocouple in your setup? I'm installing the same kit as yours. The Elephant instructions call for wiring the thermocouple to the "mounting boss" but I'm not sure what that is. Thanks!

I'm torn on this. I bought all the parts and am in the middle of the install. I'm hesitant to weld the bracket on the inner fender as it doesn't seem to line up with where the cooler wants to be. I am planning on a few DE events this year and thought this was a good idea. I'm just not confident enough in my abilities I guess?

I've never had any heat issues with this car which is the other piece that's slightly grinding on my decision to pull out the MIG.

universeman 04-30-2016 08:59 AM

Welding it in is easy if you install it first and let it hang from the top nut. It will show you exactly where it wants to be. If you don't install a fan (I didn't), you won't even need to mess with the horns!

You shouldn't have to weld anything when installing an external oil cooler, especially a fender mounted cooler.

What holds the cooler in then? I'm in the middle of a 28-tube installation and I'd love for it to be as easy as that.

universeman 05-04-2016 01:08 PM

Sorry but I think you do need to weld the bracket for the cooler into an SC, because the fender bracket from Carreras was not included on US-version SC's, just the top stud / nut for hanging the cooler from the headlight bucket.

I went to a muffler shop and had them weld mine in for $30.

RDM 05-05-2016 03:00 AM

I don't have the top hanger either. I've read the top hanger is not necessary. True?
