How many of sc owners keep the original trombone cooler?
Hi i am a newbie at this amazing cars and i was asking myself how many of you out there still keep the trombone style cooler on your 911 SC?i pretend to use my 82 SC for as a daily driver but have experienced some 210 to 220 farenheit temp with the original trombone cooler. So my main question is how many of you SC owners are still using trombone cooler and if changed to what system, cause i know ROW SC carried 28 tube brass cooler.
Thanks for your comments. |
83sc here and still run OEM trombone cooler. My temp likes to top out at 250 degrees during Colorado summers. Tim

Replaced with Terbatrol + fan. Nice for stop and go traffic in Atlanta summers.

Have a trombone in my 73.5 that has a high compression 3.2.....Very happy, can't get it over 200 degrees........No need to replace unless your climate or traffic gets your temps over 230-240 on a regular basis....

I replaced the trombone cooler with the 28 row brass cooler in my '77 with 2.7L (RS P&C, Solex Cams, Webers, SSIs). My oil temps stop rising as soon as the thermostat opens (around 180F), so I'm quite pleased.

i put the brass cooler in there as well.

Mine isn't a SC but is similar in that it is a Euro 77 Carrera 3.0.
The Trombone was fine in the Uk but couldn't hack the 40+C temps here in Oz. I installed the later Carrera cooler with the fan four years ago but still have not had to hook up the fan. Best upgrade I ever put on a Porsche! Cheers Bill |
In Texas with an 82SC, I replaced my trombone with a Carrera cooler (bought on PP classifieds) b/c my car was getting too hot in traffic. That, and adjusting timing made it run much cooler. Recommend, if your climate requires it, that you upgrade the trombone.

I bought a used cooler/fan setup off a turbo. Atlanta summers and running A/C - trombone gave just marginal cooling.
|
what about 28 tube brass coolers as upgrade?
|
Upgraded to Carrera cooler in my 80SC when I had the engine rebuilt last year.
|
I keep it in the garage on a shelf....works much better there.
Carrera cooler/block off/fan switched at the dash. I can run in 100 + degrees and stay at 200/210. |
for some unknown reason, my 78SC does not have a trombone cooler. Is it possible that all SC's did not come with one of these? I can not find any evidence that it ever had one.

Replaced mine with a Terbatrol years ago.

I am lucky i get up to actual running temps. I do lots of short runs and not much traffic. I will keep my trombone for now. It made it this long! LOL!
I would drive it for awhile and see if you need it. IF you constantly get into traffic and where you live is hot in the summertime you might need to upgrade. Or you man have no trouble at all. Cheers! |

Seems to me that it really comes down to where you'll be driving your car and the type of driving you plan to do. Lots of stop and go driving in a HOT climate (with AC on) and you'll want all the cooling you can get. Ditto if you're tracking your car significantly (with high loads on the engine) in hot weather Cooler climate with driving mostly at speed and no underlying temp issues, probably fine as-is. I have an '86 carrera (that has a carrera oil cooler without the fan) and, while I previously saw high temps while driving with the AC on in hot Washington DC summers, have had no issues since moving to Denver (and abandoning my AC system). If I saw the need to upgrade cooling, I'd go all the way and install the carrera cooler along with a fan that a) could be manually activated to address temp issues when stuck in traffic, and b) used a non-stock thermostat to activate the fan at a lower temp than the factory-provided thermostat (which didn't turn on the fan until the oil temp was QUITE hot). |

Have original trombone cooler on my 77 Targa with original 2.7 L mag case motor. Temp stays at 180 F with no problem. It's a keeper for now...
|
I had the trombone on my 83 SC with AC. In summer around Denver it got hotter than I liked. So I upgraded to Carrera cooler and fan. The fan controller is adjustable, and I set the trip temp to where I was happy, and also installed a manual over-ride and a 'fan on' indicator on dash. Engine runs cooler now, so do I.
