MoTeC or Electromotive or ....
Building a 3.2 short stroke, '86 CarreraEFI, twin plug motor (into a 1980 wide body SC)
Just spent the weekend with the EFI University guys and now it's time to purchase the ECU. The Clewett group offers the exact Electromotive package but I'm not sure anymore if there may be a better solution. The local support from Clewett is a huge factor to me though, for success. I'm not rich, since I'm building the car I can't afford to buy, but a grand more for support and maybe ease of use for less than expert level (me) is no problem. Do not consider cost in your recommendation - strictly who's the best. |

Build your ecu around your tuner. Some will only tune certain brands. If Richard is going to be your guy then Electromotive would be a good choice. Here in the PNW, Motec seems to be the choice of most tuners.

And over here in Europe, VEMS is pretty much the ECU of choice, both feature and price wise.

I think you will have to test out the vendor support systems.
How easy it is for you to access them vs long distance phone calls - communication can be frustrating. I remember those days of tech support via phone for my desktop. Good luck. |

I've had Eletromotive for 15 years and my tec3r has now migrated into my current build, a 3.4 twin plug turbo. Richard Clewett is my go to guy the few times I've had issues. I agree with others, support is key.
Cheers, Johan

I agree with all the new technologies out there to communicate. But if I was local to the tuner, I rather have actual face to face Q&A session than all that electronic suff.

I'm going with Rasant when the time comes. In the OP's case he's local, so its really a no-brainer.

I am in the same boat. Looked real hard at AEM infinity 6... But I am going to go w Link Fury. Depends how much confidence you have. Most will say: do what your tuner does. But for the money I dont think you can beat the Link. I will report to the forum someday when I get it installed.

I have no experience with the others, but I just finished a hot 2.7 build with the Electromotive XDI 2.
Twin plug, cams, carbs, I called Richard and asked if he had a program that would get me off the ground running. He asked for a few parameters and emailed me a personal bin file, for my engine. He said it would get me 90+ percent where I would want to be. The wiring was straight forward and I followed the instructions to the T. Uploaded my bin file, removed the fuses while I cranked up oil pressure, then with fuses in and fuel pump on, cranked and she fired right up and purred at idle. Shocked me, it sounds like an injected car. I need to put some miles on it for a good reference, but it seems like quality equipment, and Richard Clewett support has been great. The software is very user friendly, but I think they would have files for almost anything you would want to build. John

Tuner support will most likely tip me to Clewett and Electromotive. He's only an hour away.
Any preferences toward the performance of the coils ? Or other hard parts or is the playing field level ? Does that same question apply to the software ? Has the software been recently updated and supported ? Thank you for all the opinions.... |

One last comment about working with Clewett Engineering and Richard in particular. This guy works, and obviously loves his business. He often would email me on Saturday and Sunday and in the evenings. He is just available, and that adds value.

WNDSND, after reading your experience and re-reading the Clewett package verbiage for the twin plug 3.2, it looks like a robust combination. The plan is to get the car running and smogged NA and add the turbo later. Richard will no doubt make the difference in success.
Time to drive to Huntington Beach. |

My guess is that he can give you two program bin files. One before smogg and one for after. Easy as downloading your favorite song from iTunes..

I just installed a DTA S80 pro on my SC, very happy with it so far. Lots of features incl sequential spark and injection, launch control, traction control, shift light, closed loop etc.

The Rasant threads were rolling and then somebody applied the brakes. Richard Clewett, Pat Williams and Jeff Gamroth are aces with this stuff.
FWIW: This thread is dead as Julius Caesar too: The next big thing....3.0 EFI/ITB w/Rasant engine management
