New linkage bushings installed problem
I've just finished installing all new bushings and coupler for my shift linkage in my '84 911. Shifting is much tighter now but I am finding that I am now nicking reverse when I downshift from fifth to fourth. I never had this problem before I made the changes. Any suggestions on where I start on adjusting the linkage as I am very happy with the first through fifth sequences.

Loosen the coupler lock nut just a couple of turns and then gently tap the shifter handle towards the dash. You can leave it in neutral but I found that having in the 5th gear position makes it easier.
You probably only need to move it a few mm.

+2. I replaced destroyed coupler bushings and that obviously dramatically improved my shifter. I later replaced the ball cup and sliding rod bushings just to be thorough, and it was initially a bit worse because I did not take enough care with getting the coupler back to exactly where it was before - it is pretty sensitive to fore-aft alignment but easy to adjust.

I've had this problem; the solution is simple: you need to lengthen the gear shift selector at the coupler adjustment as follows. Slacken the coupler adjusting nut, then pull back GENTLY on the gear lever; you are looking to move it no more than 1mm at a time at the coupler, so really MINOR movement of the gear lever. Tighten nut and road test to check down shift. Repeat as necessary. Do not rotate the coupler, unless you have other issues.

^^^+1. Had same problem and just required careful adjustment of the shift coupler. Good luck, Tim
