Should I hear the fuel pump run at pre-crank position?

Car is a 1984 Turbo Look Coupe, 3.2
I can hear fuel pump run when I jump the fuse, but not at pre-crank. It could be that it is not a very loud pump. I have a 1973 914/2.0 and I can easily hear fuel pump. I am having a problem with the 911 starting consistently and am trying to diagnose. I don't like to diagnose through replacement.

3.2s only run the pump at start position or when there's a tach signal-I.E. running

Rather than buy a new pump you can have the original pump rebuilt. A lot of use here have used Fuel Injection Corp and had really good experiences.

What timing!

I just called FIC, $20 to test and $118 to rebuild.

My brand new OEM from dealer pump started to buzz after 2 years, yes after the warranty.

I am sending mine to them and send my old OEM one right after that.

Thanks Brother RichardNew

i cant comment on a 3.2 exactly, but thats the purpose of the fuel pump relay, so for an SC the pump only runs at crank or when the air flap moves (engine running), so you'll never hear the fuel pump because of all of the other noises. It sounds like a 3.2 is the same but works differently

your 73 914, and my 73 911, dont have fuel pump relays, so when you turn the ignition on hear it come on, as its a direct switch from the ignition.

You should not hear the fuel pump until you crank the starter.

Here's a helpful thread - oops, it's yours!
