1985 Carrera no crank starter problem
I have had a couple intermittent starting problems over the past few years, but they became common last month. Read the Forums, tested, cleaned trans ground strap, ran a jumper cable from the motor ground to the negative terminal, and still the solenoid just clicked. Put in a new starter and the solenoid just clicks, no start. Pulled the battery, cleaned the body ground, and cables, and it started, fixed!
Drove up to Monterey for Rennsport (awesome!), many starts and stops along the way, no problems. Driving home, stopped for dinner, then the no start problem happened again, push started and drove it home. A few days ago, I again cleaned the front body ground and straps, and it starts fine. Today I went to go for a drive...click...WTF I am usually pretty good at problem solving, but this one is beating me. HELP! |

Insure you have 12.6v prior to start and take a reading while she is on.
I suspect you may have a micro fracture at the connectors on the battery. That was my culprit. Remove and check underneath.

OK, On to something here. Just pulled the negative off and rotated it on the post, tried to start and click. Then moved the positive cable a 1/2" to the side and it started. Ordering a new set of cables right now. Thanks Draco for getting me to think Positive instead of Negative.

Oh no. if you have not order the posi-cable yet, consider just swapping out the connectors with good quality connectors and for extra measure solder them on.
I have a brand new posi cable sitting on the shelf prior to discovering the split in the connector. Moral of the story, do not over torque ![]()

I have the same problem. Did changing the cables fix the problem?
