Installing 911 european side markers
I've recently purchased the 911 european side markers from Pelican, does anyone know how to install them? In specific where abouts to drill on the fender. I know no-one likes to drill their fenders but since I've already decided to do it, wouldn't want to drill on the wrong location.
Thank You |

Dr Kevin,
Thanks for the reply. Your car looks great. Measurements would be great. Anything you could measure that would be a good point of reference... bottom of the door to the bottom of the light itself? Bottom of the door to the middle of the actual hole? Also the measurement from the right of the door to the middle of the hole? Any point of reference you choose would be great. I'm tempted to do it just by looking at the picture of your car ![]() Thanks for your help. How did you decide where to drill? I've looked all over the web and technical boards but haven't had much luck... that is... until you responded ![]() |

It is not just a matter of drilling. You also have to file a slot. I purchased some sheet metal at Home Depot and practiced before I cut into my fenders. I would suggest you do that. You will not be as nerveous. Also, you can purchase a special titanium cone drill at Sears that will help you you cut the hole...not cheap though.

Guy,
What do you mean by "You also have to file a slot"? Does it require a hole plus filing? Could you be using different markers than me? Also, what size drill bit did you buy? Thanks for the info |

hole for starting the slot...
The hole required to fit the bulb/holder is larger than what you would use as a drill bit. Also, one mounting/hold side is a rectangular shaped tab, so after drilling a small hole the area is lengthened side to side to pass the piece.

After inspecting the side markers I noticed it may require 2 holes, a big one for the bulb with a filed slot and a little one to keep it from moving up/down. Have you guys found this to be the case?
If any of you have some measurements, please let me know. Also, if in fact I have to drill two holes which one goes in front, if we use the front of the car and work our way back, is the first hole the big one or the little one? I ask this because I'm not sure which way the lenses go, with the arrows pointing forward towards the car or backwards towards the rear ??? |

I bring positive proof that the new year's eve drinking has not erased my memory, but I only thought again of replying to you right now: I went down and measured the dimensions on my 1988 Carrera Euro side-lights.
It's a bit difficult for me to explain, but this should provide you with a good guideline: (1) Euro side-lights MOUNTED on my car, I measured everything with a flexible measure, metric. I only measured the port (left)side (the wing with the gas-filler trap door). Placement on the starboard (right) other wing is assumed to be perfectly symmetrical/mirror image of the left wing placement. VERTICAL PLACEMENT a)From the edge of the wing (where it meets the hood), passing the tape measure vertically downwards, over the most rearward facing edge of the gas-filler trap door) To the TOP edge of the Euro side-light Measures 270 mm (it could be 268-269 mm) Continue downwards... b) From the BOTTOM edge of the Euro side-light vertically downwards To the top edge of the black rubber strip ( which runs the length of the mid-section of the car, below the doors) Measures 385 mm. HORIZONTAL PLACEMENT Measuring rear to front, horizontally, FROM the edge of the door-opening, TILL the right-hand (rear facing) edge of the side-light Measures 77 millimeters. It is impractical to measure from the fore/left edge of the side-light to the next forward edge, because that is the headlamp (the line runs above the circular cutout for the wheels/tires), there is no way to be precise enough. So, the above are measurements with the side-light already mounted. Then I removed the side-light, and it looks as follows: There are 2 holes: Starting from the edge of the fore part of the door opening, moving towards the front of the car, the sequence is: 89 mm sheet metal, then a circular hole 24 mm diameter, then a sheet metal gap(let) of 9 mm, then a circular hole 8 mm. The holes are perfectly aligned on a horizontal line, measured as above. So, the total distance is 89 + 24(hole) + 9 + 8(hole) mm on a horizontal line pointing to the fore end of the Porsche 911 (what else!) The holes are perfectly circular holes, there are no cutouts in them (for clips or whatever...) The side-light itself (measured on the back side, because the front is rounded-off) is 34 mm (vertically) by 59 mm (horizontally), and is held (at the fore/left side) by a plastic clip/lip on the body of the side-light itself (at the rear/right side) by a metallic springclip thing on the mounting for the lightbulb itself (a rubber and metal holder with a springy thing sort of like the holder of a Parker/other fountain pen which compresses against the edge of the bigger hole... If you have any questions, mail me paul.franssen@pandora.be and I will try to assist... Good luck! BTW, I don't wish to patronize, but you might not be familiar with metrics: 10 mm=1 cm (sorry, I cant bear to think of doing this in inches!!)
