Widest tire that will fit under rear of 1977 Porsche 911S

What is the widest tire you can fit under the rear of a 1977 Porsche 911S with a 911 Fuch 16x7 wheel?

Search is your friend -- your car's commonly referenced as a "midyear" -- search the forum for "midyear tire" and you'll find threads that address/discuss this very issue.

225 50/16's will fit with enough negative camber. They may rub a bit on the inner fender on hard cornering during acceleration. That's about it with those wheels.

Diggem,

I have a '74 mid-year and the widest tire that I have been able to fit is a 205/50/16. However, you can get a wider tire in the rear if you switch to a Porsche 944/951 16x8 Fuchs. This is because with the 8" 951 Fuchs the added width is 1/2" on both the inside and outside of the rim. A 911 16x8 will not fit as all the extra width is on the outside edge.

My car with 205/50/16 rear and 195/55/16 front:

stock 205/60-15 rubs fender

At stock height & camber settings, with original 15x6 Fuchs and Pirelli 205/60-15 rubs the fender, (not the lip).

OK on right side.

dead stock,

I've experienced tire rub on my '77 running 205s as well, didn't happen with every brand, but on several. I finally got sick of it and went with 195s.

If you don't mind running a tad smaller diameter tire, you can get a 215/50-16 to fit with 951 8x16.

I used to run 215/60-15 on 911 7x15's with rolled lips and minimal rub.

I think the 195/50-15s lowered the car about 3/4 inch. and the improvement in grip, (over 20 year old Pirellis :-) was astounding, not to mention a little improvement in gearing.

Would it be safe to run 205/65 15" tires on a stock ride height '77 US spec Targa ? I don't want any rubbing.
