Some odd about Porsche Classic oil filters
I thought I would go for something different and picked up two Porsche Classic oil filters (the red ones) from our host for my '88 Carrera. After 20 years of factory black ones, why not try something different, right? I don't know.....
The sealing o-ring of the red filter is smaller than the black, actually the O.D. matches the black's I.D. The red filter is a little longer, don't think thats gonna be an issue. What bothers me the most is that there is only four "clean oil" exit holes and not the traditional six found on the original. Please see photos. ![]() ![]() Kinda bothered me....The part numbers seem to correlate with '88 Carreras, but its not just a red outer case on the original 930.107.764 filter. Guess I'll use my last black filter tomorrow and contact Pelican on Monday to see what they think.

I would try it, if temps go up faster than normal, swap it out immediately.
I tried the WIX aka Napa Gold and that sucker was too good at filtering, as a results slowed the flow and heated up the engine, NO THANKS, swapped back to Mahle.

I wonder if the newer 4 hole version has been designed to flow better? The position size and shape of holes all appear different, perhaps it works even better than the old tech?

does the new one have the anti-drain-back valve that the old (mahle) one had? Not sure I view a purolator filter as a step up from mahle (which I believe was the previous porsche OEM supplier)?

From what I have seen w/ 993 filters the red Purolator filter would have a worse but still acceptable flat spring bypass spring design as compared to the Mann coil spring design. The anti drain back valve on the 4 hole Purolater is far more efficient than the one seen on the 993 Mann's and is almost mandatory on the 993tt to eliminate or reduce start up smoke. The 4 holers also seem to have a lower pleat count which flows and filters slightly worse than the higher pleat count Mann's
I've seen the 993 filters apart but not the newer red ones, back in the day I always used the red Purolaters.
