Holy Cap: What's the trick for Dist Cap?

Hi Pelicans,

I have an 86 coupe, and this morning I decided to tackle the spark plugs cap and rotor. Using the Hazet tool and a short handled ratchet, the spark plugs were EASY (thanks Pelicans), but more on that later. I thought I was at the easy part when I got to the distributor cap but:

I can't remove the plugs from the top of the cap to save my life. I've tried bare hands, I've tried gloves, I've tried pliers with a rag wrapped around them.

I'm afraid of breaking something. Any tips?

Are you referring to the rubber insulators?

Hi

Yes,

On top of the cap, the spark plug wires plug into the cap. If those are called rubber insulators, then yes.

Use a pick tool and carefully slip it under the lip to make an air gap and then pull off. Wen you re-install get some dielectric grease and lightly smear some inside the insulator/sleeve/plug but not the wire lead and use the same pick tool to remove all air gaps.

You must hear a "click" to insure full contact of the lead to the leads on the dizzy.

O.K., Then, the first thing I would try would be to gently peel back the rubber insulator around the entire circumference letting some air into the insulator.

Please do not pull on the wire yet.

You can use one of those nylon or plastic trim tools to get under the rubber boots to loosen them. They are stuck to your cap.

3.2s (and later) have a ridged pin in the cap terminal and the wire end is female and they get a grip on each other. It's not just the boot.

I just used a screwdriver to kind of scrunch up the boot a bit, creating a pocket of air. That worked. They didn't come off easy but also not that hard. Getting the new cap and rotor on was a breeze. I appreciate the help y'all.

Together with the plugs the idle seems a bit smoother and revs seem more eager.

Right, but isn't that thing for the spark plug boots? I had no problem with those.

On mine, I had to get a pair of pliers and squeeze the top of the cap. After rotating back and forth and then leaning the pliers a couple of degrees this way and that it popped off. That tool looks pretty handy, tho.

When you put them back on use talcum powder between rubber and plastic surfaces. It is even the recommended service procedure for 2017 911s. It is for removal purposes at coil/plug interface.
