3.0 engine with 930 transmission

Wondering if anyone has any experience running a stock 3.0 engine with a 930 4 speed transmission? My concern is the difference in gearing and if the taller gears on the 930 will make it a dog to drive. The car came with the transmission and no engine when I purchased it so its already there. Was going to go LS which would of made the trans perfect, but recently picked up a 3.0.
Anyone's experience or knowledgeable input would be appreciated.

FWIW, the top two gears in the 930 trans are actually overdrives - so, you will be searching the rev range to get torque when you want it.

what about on a motor like a 3.6 from a 993? would the extra power make it more manageable?

This has been my thought exactly. The lack of power and torque will just not be enough for the gearing of the 930 trans.
I would imagine a 3.6 would do just fine with it.

Just sell the gearbox. You should get enough for it to buy a decent 915.

I would buy the 930 Trans out right or work a deal for a SC box that is rebuilt.
You are located where?
I am in NJ

87 is a long bell housing that should be solid mount holes. That means that it can be shortened. These are among the most desireable and easy to sell.

I just did a quick search and its only $600 to have the bellhousing and input shaft shortened from California Motorsports. That's pretty reasonable. I knew the short bellhousing 930 transmissions are the most desirable and expensive, but I didnt know I had one that was this easily converted.
Thanks for the info.

I've got a 915 built with WEVO gear. Shoot me an email if you are considering a trade.

An ls conversion would be fun... Go for it...

Sourcing a proper motor and trans will financially drain you...

I always thought the 3.6/G50 combo in the 993 really needed a little tighter spread 1-4. I don't see putting a 3.6 in with that 930 box as a recipe for fun.

So, this is gonna be an 87 turbo body w/ a 3.0 and 915 (maybe) box? Hmmmm. None of this is really adding up, in my opinion.

I never said anything about a 87 turbo body car. Its a 78sc that came with an LS adapter plate, engine cradle, and 930 transmission.

I recently found a rebuilt 82 3.0 engine and wanting to just keep it more original and porsche. I already have a turbo Ls1 car, dont really need another one and want to keep the value there for this car as more original with some simple tasteful updates.

what kind of value would you put on that transmission? Not sure I would want to do a straight trade.

Sorry, bad assumption. The transmission threw me off. 3.0 and 915 sounds good to me!
